64 bit print server...

has anyone ever set up a 64 bit print server? I wanted to make my windows

server 2003 x64 r2 into a print server but it seems to be a bad idea because

I can't get anything to work properly...

Not all printers have x64 drivers, so what do you do? Try to use the x86?

Doesn't work.

Try to use just generic and then specific the x86 drivers? Doesn't

work....always says they're not the right drivers....

Guess i'll just reinstall with 32 bit.

Re: 64 bit print server...

In general, what you need to do is install the printers using the 64 bit

drivers on the print server, then, add the 32 bit drivers as "Additional

Drivers". See http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/AddDrivertoOldOS.htm - ignore

the reference to "older versions of Windows" - the technique works for

"newer" OSs and 64/32 bit environments as well.

Note that if the 32 bit OS has in-box drivers for the printer model, you

usually don't have to install the "Additional Drivers", the Add Printer

(wizard or function) will automatically use the in-box driver - if the

driver names are identical.

Sometimes you run into issues that the Driver Name is NOT identical in both

OSs - this can be a nuisance and difficult to circumvent - you might have to

resort to the method described at

http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/NetPrinterNoPP.htm.

It is perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
