Hedge Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 Hi when I tried to log into windows live messenger the other day it said that I needed to update to continue. When I tried to download this update, it wouldn't do it. I uninstalled windows live messenger off the computer but have left most of the components that are a part of it there. I have then tried to download it again and to no avail. Can someone please help as I'm reaching the end of my tether slowly. Thanks Quote
Hedge Posted November 17, 2009 Author Posted November 17, 2009 Problem with Windows Live Messenger Right then, I have just tried downloading windows live again and this is the message I have just had: Downloads\wlsetup-custom.exe.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read. Try again later, or contact the server administrator. Can someone please help!!! Quote
RandyL Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Hi Hedge. After uninstalling it go to C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger and delete everything in there. When downloading the wlsetup-custom.exe file choose to Run instead of Save. If that's what you tried and it didn't work try Save and run it from the saved location. Also you said the file was Downloads\wlsetup-custom.exe.part The correct file you need is Downloads\wlsetup-custom.exe Get it from Live Essentials. Quote We are all members helping other members. Hedge Posted November 17, 2009 Author Posted November 17, 2009 I have already uninstalled messenger, I have download both wlsetup.exe.part and all the other ones and it says the same message. When I go into downloads and double click on this icon, it says that wlsetup-custom.exe is not a valid Win32 application. What else can I do? Quote

RandyL Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Go to C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger and delete everything in there. Go to Live Essentials. Click Download. Click Run. Also make sure you have all your Windows updates first. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. RandyL Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Hedge are you still using Limewire or any other P2P program? Do you have any software obtained via P2P? Do you have or can you download Windows updates? Did you ever resolve your Microsoft Office update problem? Did you ever resolve your Flash problem? Quote We are all members helping other members. jacwat Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I had just this same problem and have spent ages online looking for the answer before I finally found the solution to mine: You have to uninstall completely if you are having problems with it, use zapmessenger to unistall all of it because if one little piece is left anywhere on your machine you will not be able to re-install it with a fresh download. This is where to get zapmessenger: http://messengergeek.spaces.live.com/blog/cns To use ZapMessenger, just download the zip and run. I couldn't do it at first then I read that .NET Framework 2.0 or above is required. (The link for this is also on that page) It really does seem to be the best way to get rid of WLM you won't be able to find it all for yourself to uninstall, thousands have tried! See how you get on It works just fine now. Hope this helps someone else. Quote
jacwat Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Sorry I just tried the link to zapmessenger and it didn't go to the correct page ...this is the one: Solving Messenger install, reinstall and uninstall issues with ZapMessenger - Windows Live Quote
