Guest Pannadharo Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Am looking for information that can lead to fix for W2KAS when installing 2G RAM. Motherboard: Asus A7M266-D Processor(s) (2): AMD Athalon XP 1800+ DIMM: KVR266X64C25/512 I have been running two KVR266X64C25/512 for about three years on this server, but when I install two of the same chip W2KAS crashes with a different STOP message each time, and never in the same stage of bootup. Sometimes it will make it into the OS and allow me to run an application, but the moment the application loads the OS crashes to a reboot. I tried inserting the /PAE switch in boot.ini, but this has not corrected the problem. However, when I remove the two new DIMM's W2KAS boots fine and operates perfectly. I shut down the server, took out the old DIMM's and put in the new DIMM's (still only using two chips) and W2KAS boots fine and operates perfectly. The problem is when I insert all four chips at once. At first I thought this could have been faulty chips (all Non-ECC btw) so I bought two more and the problem is the same. Please help ...
Guest Fritz Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Re: System Crashes with 2G Memory Supposedly that motherboard supports PC1600 and PC2100 DIMMs. The model you posted is PC2700. It may work fine by itself but not when mixed with other PCxxxx's. What are the specs of the original RAM? Guest Fritz Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Re: System Crashes with 2G Memory BTW. This is a hardware issue, not a W2KAS issue. Kingston specs on this particular DIMM is PC2100 > > What are the specs of the original RAM? > KVR266X64C25/512 However, after doing some rather extensive digging, it appears that because I am using Non-ECC DIMM's I cannot use four slots (or three for that matter) of Non-ECC DIMM's (X64) with this motherboard, but can with X72R (Registered). So it seems that if I want to upgrade to 2G of RAM, Im going to have to do it with 2x1GB Non-ECC chips (or 4x512MB Registered). Hardware is fine. BIOS is fine. Thanks for the response(s). ..
