Trippy Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Hi everyone A couple of questions please? I just checked the sticky for your list of recommended AV software and noticed that McAfee AV security centre is not listed. Is there any particular reason other than price? My subscription's 3 year renewal is up early next year and I would like to get the best security at trhe best price. Never had any problems with McAfee but it is getting rather expensive. Secondly a firewall question. My Netgear router DG834PN is firewalled, XP and Vista have their own firewalls enabled on my machines and, as far as I can tell, so is the McAfee firewall on each box/lapdog! It doesn't seem to cause any problems but what is the best practise here? As always any advice gratefully received Trippy :) Quote A Cynic is merely an Idealist with his eyes open
RandyL Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 I've been using Mcafee VirusScan Plus for years and it has served me well but as you said it's not cheap. You should only be running one firewall on the computers themselves. So if the Mcafee firewall is enabled check to see if the Windows firewall is disabled. The Mcafee firewall is better than the Windows firewall. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. Trippy Posted November 19, 2009 Author Posted November 19, 2009 Thanks RL. I will probably stick with McAfee as It's always done what it says on the packet. Some of my colleagues have had poor experiences with Norton AV and conflicts slowing machines down in the past so I have been put off by their experience (although I was a great fan of Norton Commander in the DOS days). I'll switch off the Windows firewalls as you suggest. Many thanks! Trippy Quote A Cynic is merely an Idealist with his eyes open
