Guest pez Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 Over the past month I have noticed the event log below. Every few days the time server will change from one DC to the other. What is causing this to occur? Event Type: Information Event Source: W32Time Event Category: None Event ID: 35 Date: 2/13/2008 Time: 7:11:20 AM User: N/A Computer: CLIENT NAME Description: The time service is now synchronizing the system time with the time source time server.domain.name (ntp.d|xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:123->time server IP:123).
Guest Meinolf Weber Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 Re: Xp client keeps switching between time servers. Hello pez, Time sync in a domain run this way, the PDCEmulator is the "master" time server, either with external time source or not. Every DC synchronize with the PDCEmulator and member servers and workstations use one of the DC's. Doesn't matter which one. Guest Ryan Hanisco Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 Re: Xp client keeps switching between time servers. So, the bottom line is that this isn't a big deal and should be considered a normal event. This should not be causing you problems as everything should be in sync. Of course, you could always specify time servers in your DHCP settings, but this take out the additional redundancy that you would normally have in allowing the workstations to go to any Domain Controller. -- Ryan Hanisco MCSE, MCTS: SQL 2005, Project+ http://www.techsterity.com Chicago, IL Remember: Marking helpful answers helps everyone find the info they need quickly. Thank you for the information. I was having a hard time finding any documentation on this.
Guest Bruce Sanderson Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 Re: Xp client keeps switching between time servers. There's quite a bit of documentation about the Windows Time Service in the Microsoft TechNet web site. For example, see http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/b43a025f-cce2-4c82-b3ea-3b95d482db3a1033.mspx?mfr=true See also my post in the thread "time sync from NTP in win 2003" in the microsoft.public.windows.server.active_directory newsgroup. -- Bruce Sanderson http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders It is perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
