Vista Home Premium and Terminal Licensing

I'm hoping I can explain this correctly...Our Citrix server runs on Windows

2000 and as a requirement has terminal services installed - our applications

are accessed via a Citrix Metaframe website. However, the licensing server

in our organization is a Windows 2003 R2 Server. Because the clients connecting

to our Citrix server (win2k terminal server) are XP Pros, our 2003 licensing

server gives them a "built-in" license that never expires. I have a user

that purchased a Vista Home Premium Edition and wants to be able to connect

to our Citrix server from home, but it is my understanding that they will

only be given a temporary license, since that is what happens when users

with XP Home connect to our Citrix, and then that license expires in about

120 days. If I purchased a single windows 2003 user or device cal for this

particular user, will this user be able to obtain a valid license for Home

Edition that will never expire? Or because it is home edition, it will never

be granted a permanent license?

Thank you!

Re: Vista Home Premium and Terminal Licensing

First of all, the temporary license will expire after 90 days, not

120.

Second, you cannot buy a Per User TS CAL, since your Terminal

Servers run W2K, and they don't know what a Per User TS CALs is.

W2K is always licensed Per Device.

A purchased TS CAL always has an expiration date, 52-89 days after

issueing, but there is also an automatic renewal process, so that

shouldn't be a problem. To the user, it will seem that the license

never expires.

Re: Vista Home Premium and Terminal Licensing

Vera, thank you so much for the reply.

So, if I purchase 1 TS Device CAL and install it on my 2003 licensing server,

when that client attempts to connect he should be assigned that TS license

for his Vista Home PC and we will be good to go?

Thanks,

Sara

Re: Vista Home Premium and Terminal Licensing

I *believe* so, yes.

Disclaimer: I have never tested this, and like most others, I'm

utterly confused by all the different versions of Vista and their

features or lack thereof.

I know that you cannot use Vista Home to connect *to* with rdp, but

you should be able to use it as an rdp client. And in fact, you are

already using it as such, albeit on a temporary license. So yes, I

would proceed like this.

Re: Vista Home Premium and Terminal Licensing

Thank you, Vera!

I guess it's worth a test anyway. It's only $80 for the license so we'll

see if it does the trick for them.

Thanks!
