Okies I'm a new member and this is my first post but I'll try to keep it as detailed as possible. The problems aren't on my computer but my to be step-brothers computer. He has an xp 64 bit professional VT8363 with a 1x AMD Duron processor. The computer has both a local C: drive and a data D: drive.

When I first looked on his computer it was virus infected and the LTDR cd drive didn't work. I had to delete the upper filter {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} in regedit to get that to work. Well all was fine, I restarted after doing so and the cd drive works but the keyboard now doesn't work. Also the keyboard doesn't show up with the hardware. I tried switching the computer on without the keyboard plugged in but then the computer wouldn't load up because the keyboard wasn't plugged in. It also told me to tpye f1 to get it to start which I did and then it loaded up. Oh the last thing regarding the keyboard is when I went in to go and add new hardware the pc crashed on me which resulted in me having to re load it.

Once I got the cd drive up and running I install avast, super anti-spyware and malwarebyte's anti-malware on the computer and scanned it.

The other thing is I've installed pc tools firewall plus onto the computer but it keeps getting disabled so it's not working. I've tried enabling it but that doesn't work. Also windows own firewall wont stay enabled either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also thanks in advance.:o

Personally having the option and by the sounds of things I would Back up all his files on the D Drive, then format and re install the OS, once that is done I would then ether use Avast or other reputable AV to scan the D drive, or better use an online scanner like eset.

Thanks I seem to have got the keyboard to work by making sure it was it enabled in BIOS. Also I switched his computer on with only the mouse and monitor plugged in then switched it off and took out the power cable. I left the tower to then cool down before I plugged in the keyboard at the back followed by the power cable. It seemed to work for some strange reason.

Thanks all the same. Still haven't worked out why the firewall won't switch on yet though. I also can't really re-format his computer because it was made for him and he doesn't have any of the disks for it.

Hi Rebecca, It seems like there is a possibilty there is still some malware in there that Malwarebyte and the others can't deal with, that is turning the firewalls off, If you post that in our malware section and a link to this thread so Chiaz can follow it through. Then follow this and post it in the security forum.

Please download the latest version of HijackThis from Trend Micro and save it to your desktop.

  • Download HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install HijackThis.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in Notepad. Include this log in your next reply.

Notes:

Do not use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.

Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless, or required for your computer to run like it should.

Thanks I'll ask him to give me his computer back at the weekend so I can do it. Had to let him get it back so he could do some homework but it's not rigged up to the internet. Can I install hijack this onto a disk like I have the other programs or isn't that possible?

As HJT is being updated frequently, it is best perhaps to download direct onto the machine. Considering the firewall is likely to be off at start up, check it is turned back on before connecting to the net.

If however there is a problem in making it connect, then by all means download to a disk, pen, or flash drive to install from

Okies danzil I tried what you suggested but nope nothing I'm afraid. It's all either microsoft files like ctfmon or a program I know is on the computer. Nothing I haven't a clue about. Also the keyboard has stopped working again.

Now if I try to use there USB keyboard it doesn't freeze up the computer like mine it just doesn't work. I've also tried using it on our computer but liek their computer it only seems to work in BIOS setup which is odd right? I did enable USB keyboard and disable USB controller thinking that might do the trick but nope it didn't. Oh I nearly forgot to mention that the first light on the keyboard does flash up....or do you guys just think it's had it?:(

There USB mouse also works on our computer but it's not registered on there's yet a normal port mouse does. I was wondering if there's anything in BIOS that does that. They have a very complex BIOS setup actually compared to mine come to think of it. They have about 5 USB things but me thinks it's because it's in a gaming case like whereas ours is home.

It also always does a disk check with drive :D...don't know if that's any relevance...

Also I've got the log thing but how do I track it to this thread...please answer me nev or danzil or randyl or one of yous :D ....I haven't a foggiest how to track a thread dears...I'm a damsel in distress...
