MSN Messenger - .sqm Files

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have 3 users running MSN Messenger Live v8.1 Build 8.1.0178.00. One of the

users noticed .sqm files stored all over the place - root of C:, certain

shared network drives, etc.

I Googled around & the consensus is that they are harmless and can be

deleted but I would like to stop them from being created altogether. The

closest I got were instructions on disabling the 'Customer Experience

Improvement Program' option however the instructions must've been written for

a different version since only 1 of the 2 options were available:

This one I found on v8.1

-- Open MSN Messenger

-- Go to Help

-- Go to Customer Experience Improvement Program and put a check in "I don't

want to participate right now"

This one I did NOT find on v8.1

-- Open MSN Messenger

-- Go to Tools

-- Go to Options

-- Go to General tab

-- Remove option to join Microsoft's Customer Experience Improvement Program

(CEIP)

After putting the check in "I don't want to participate right now" the

generation of these .sqm files seems to have slowed, but not stopped. Any

recommendations on how to kill these altogether???

Thanks for your time!

Lori,

MSN Messenger questions should be sent to MSN Support as they are the best place to help

Re: MSN Messenger - .sqm Files

these are generated by the SHARED FOLDER service of live messenger,

go to live messenger and disable the shared folder options

AND THEN turn off the Messenger sharing service USN journal that

you will find among the services

doing the first only works too... but dont just turn off the service without

doing the setting I said in live messenger

to find the services go to START > run > and type services.msc and press

enter, right click on the service and select stop>

and then disable it

Newbie Coder & PA Bear -

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction for the Windows Live Messenger

newsgroup - I DID look for it but couldn't find it so I just posted it here

as a hail mary. But I made a note of it and will post questions there in the

future.

On the Bridge -

I'll give it a shot & will let you know! Thanks so much!!
