Long delay during POST

Recommended Posts

Posted

This machine has a consistent 40 second delay during POST before windows

starts to load. This is not normal as I usually see less than 10 seconds

delay in other computers.

Included for info:

autoexec.bat

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D3 T4

LH C:\WINDOWS\AU30DOS.COM

Set tvdumpflags=8

config.sys

numlock = off

What are usual causes of a long delay here, and a fix?

Unimportant, the computer is nowhere near there yet.

What might have helped is info about the computer itself.

___________

Quien sabe, I'm not a hardware type. However, since POST is an

acronym for power on self test, I'd guess it is having a problem

determining if hardware and/or RAM are functioning properly or even

detecting same.

Fix? Gotta determine the cause - as opposed to symptom - of the

problem first. IOW, take out all hardware possible - including extra

RAM sticks and drives, etc. - and see if it improves. That's what I'd

do at least, YMMV and probably does.

Re: Long delay during POST

Just because 40 seconds is not normal for "other computers" does not make it

not normal for the machine in front of you. Put in another drive, install

Windows, test.

Then again, those sound drivers may be taking a few seconds to load things

up. Try disabling Autoexec.bat and Config.sys using MSCONFIG. Any change?

Thanks, Gary.

As usual, you have the answer. That cut the delay back to 15 seconds,

fine with me.

I will enable config.sys again, as I need numlock = off.

Regarding autoexec.bat, I know W98SE does not need it, if I just put in a

empty autoexec.bat, the question:

I notice with it disabled, I still have the sound icon in the System

Tray, I still have everything normal in Multimedia in Control Panel.

What purpose is served when the sound drivers are loaded in autoexec.bat?

I'm glad that fixed it for him but why?? POST is before Windows even

starts to load and it is Windows that loads drivers, checks config.sys

and executes autoexe.bat, no?

Odd (to me). Isn't numlock on or off a bios setting?

I didn't look for it in this BIOS, but the config fix is what I always

use. Is there a real use for NUM Lock these days?

If you never boot to DOS to run a game that might want to use

AU30DOS.COM, put an "REM" in front of that line. It's highly doubtful

Windows would ever use it.

IO.sys processes MSDOS.sys (or Winboot.ini), Config.sys & Autoexec.bat

before it loads Windows...

My guess is that the delay is after POST, during startup of Windows, and that "ms"

mistakenly referred to the delay as being during POST.

I have always set NUMLOCK to ON in the BIOS setup, on desktop computers. If you

don't turn NUMLOCK on, how do you utilise your numeric keypad on the right side of

the keyboard?

On laptops, I leave it off unless I have a specific use for it during a session,

then I turn it on manually, for obvious reasons.

As PCR mentioned, those audio entries in autoexec.bat are for sound in a DOS session

(not a DOS box in Windows) such as when playing a DOS game. They would be better

put into a dosstart.bat file if you really needed them for that.

The "Set tvdumpflags" entry is used by Zone Alarm....google tvdumpflags and then

decide if you want to re-enable that entry in autoexec.bat.

To allow "sound" when running "DOS programs".

As far as the lines;

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D3 T4

Set tvdumpflags=8

those may be used in Windows also. Either way there is no significant

time delay in those two SET commands.

I would do as PCR suggests and just disable the LH C:\WINDOWS\AU30DOS.COM

command.

Check it out. Most, if not all, BIOS from the last decade or so can control numlock.

> Is there a real use for NUM Lock these days?

Why do say that? I keep mine always on.

Thanks to all, that cleared it up, will REM those lines.

I only use the right number key pad for HOME and Page UP/DOWN, find it is

much handier to have NUMLOCK off all the time. In that, everyone is

different.

Yes, my error. For clarification, if the first screen stays for a long

time, the correct statement is that POST did occur, is finished, and the

delay afterword is after POST?

In which case try Boot Log Analyzer v1.23 (freeware) to determine the

bottleneck.

Still available at :-

Re: Long delay during POST

I've seen SCSI do that. If SCSI is detected, some SCSI BIOS's will

try to walk the entire SCSI bus to scan for devices, one at a time. That

means reset and timeout for each device in order.

That is true, as ms admits. I can't find who, but someone in here did

figure he overestimated the duration of post besides you. I can't blame

dadiOH for not figuring it too. Me 'n Blanton WOULD have-- but you beat

us to it!

My guess is that the delay is after POST, during startup of Windows, and that "ms"

mistakenly referred to the delay as being during POST.

But I might have guessed it was you. Very good, as usual. I'm busy in
