Combining XP with SP2 for reinstallation

Recommended Posts

My computer came with XP SP1. Recently I had to reinstall the software and I

came across articles 894947-894950: "Combining Windows XP with Service Pack 2

for reinstallation (parts 1 - 4)" that describe how to create a boot disc

with XP and SP2 integrated using the original XP1 disk, downloaded SP2, and

BBIE software to extract the boot image. I followed along with everything

until the very end. It says to create a new folder called "Xpcd" with the XP

files and SP2 integrated. That was easy. Then it says to run BBIE to extract

the boot image from the original XP SP1 disk and create a file image1.bin on

the desktop. That was easy. But it doesn't say what to do with that file. It

says that once image1.bin is created on the desktop then burn the files in

the Xpcd folder onto a new disk, but it doesn't say what to do with the image

file. I tried burning it onto the disk also but that didn't create a bootable

disk. The last paragraph of article 894950 is cryptic. I've tried figuring it

out on my own with no success. Help.

You use that in your burning application (Windows XP will not do it) to make

a bootable CD and that is the boot image.

The better way to do this is with Autostreamer, the SP2 file, and your SP1

CD. Autostreamer will look at the CD, at the SP2 file, and will create an

ISO image that you can open with most CD burning applications. The result

will be a bootable SP2 CD, not a copy of an ISO file on the CD.

Google Autostreamer and you'll find a download location quickly.

I have used both Autostreamer and nLite and like nLite for its speed.

Re: Combining XP with SP2 for reinstallation

Tried that using Roxio Creator. Tried creating bootable disk, selecting the

image file when prompted, and then added the remaining files. Burned the disk

and then couldn't boot from it. What could I be doing wrong?

-----tried this. Used Roxio to create a bootable disk, selecting the BBIE

created image file when requested and then adding the rest of the files. But

the resulting disk could not be used to boot from. This site suggests using

different software from BBIE, but it costs $30 and its not something I plan

to use a whole bunch (unless you can point out a real utility for the

non-power user), so I would prefer not to use that technique.
