DVD to CD

Hello. This is my first thread here.

I've looked through but I can't see this thread covered. So here goes

 

I have a fairly old computer running XP professional.

Today I decided to put all my photos onto a DVD. My computer has an NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A dvd writer.

 

Now when I put a blank DVD in it it seems to turn itself in to a CD drive and won't read the disk. It says there is a CD-RW in the machine when it is a DVD-RW in there.

 

I am fairly knowledgable about computers but this has me stumped. Any ideas on what the problem could be and if possible how do I solve this? Thankyou.

When you troubleshoot the drive does it give you an error code. Also have you tried going back to your previous driver settings or updating your drive?

I've tried updating the driver and it says that it cannot find any better than I am. Trouble shooter does not seem to cover this problem. Cannot fathom it. It will play movies but not read a blank disk.

Hi,You have several other threads on the forum all on this subject, would you like the others deleted?

So, OK it refuses to recognise a DVD-RW, have you tried other types of disk, try a DVD/R, then try CD/RW and CD/R, If it refuses DVD disks only but can recognise CD disks, it could be the DVD read/Write head as these drives have separate heads for each type of disk.

Next question is the type of DVD disk and the type of DVD drive, some earlier drives would only work with DVD - or negative, if the disk you are trying is + positive it will refuse to recognise it.

also check that you have the latest firmware for the drive as they need 'updates' to recognise some media

to update, I have done a quick search and can confirm that your drive should handle both + and - types of disk, also I have found a source for the firmware Dalo suggests, have a look here-

I personally would go direct to NEC NEC: DVD/CD Support and make sure you read and then re read the instructions as if you mess the flash up it can render the drive useless

Nice one Dalo, I did say it was only a quick search!!

I would agree that the NEC site is best. However do read all instructions fully.

NEC also state that this drive is nearing the end of it's projected service life, so please be aware the fault could be the drive itself, as in the read/write head gone phut.

I wasn't having a go Nev and the fact that the drives are 'at the end of their service life' only means that NEC will not be supporting anymore updates...
