Guest wilscott1st@yahoo.com Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 I think my tape drive went "kablooy". I was using backup exec and a benchmark dlt tape drive. until i get another tape drive and install it and configure backup exec to use it what do you think if I... Use windows backup and back up entire drives and system states to another machine (a client, servers don't have enough room to hold their own back ups) then copy the backups to a removable hard drive (usb) There are issues with connecting the removable hard drive directly to the servers, mapped shares and drive letter assignments seem to be confusing the server(s). I DON'T want to be "naked" Suggestions?

Backups over the network can stink. I'd do this directly to a removable hard drive - if you want all your USB drives to get the same letter, google for USBDLM.

Yes, I've done it lots of times.

As Lanwench stated, network backups can suck. A 40Gb backup can take like 6h. The usb disk will do the job nicely but you have to remember to format it as ntfs or the backup file will stop at 4Gb.
