I thought I read somewhere that support for Windows XP was finishing with the

release of SP3 sometime this year and that the Product Activation was going

to be done away with, can anyone tell me if this is correct or not, or are we

going to be stuck with this horror called Wpa forever.

WPA ?

Do you mean WGA - Windows Genuine Advantage ?

I doubt that MS will do away with WGA.

Re: Wpa

Only those who install a non-genuine copy of Windows XP

will have any issues with Product Activation (PA) and

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA).

Only you would post such a blatant lie.

MS has stated that SP3 is the final service pack for XP. However, XP

continues in active support (meaning that enhancements and new features are

still possible) until at least 2009 and will enter extended support next

year (lasting until 2014). During extended support MS will continue to

issue updates and hotfixes.

On the subject of activation, I had the opportunity to ask that question of

someone at MS who makes those sorts of decisions and the answer I got was

that MS would make provision for offline activation should the activation

servers ever stop serving activation requests for XP over the internet or by

phone. That day is a long way off, however.

If you mean WGA, I doubt WGA will go away. If anything, it will get more and

more sophisticated.

Consider automobiles. Originally they didn't even require license plates!

Now they have VINs and secret numbers scattered throughout the entire

chassis.* Plus every easily removable part, such as radios and air-bags, are

serialized and cross-referenced.

This has to be done to thwart the thieves.

With increasing technology, I expect every legit copy of the software to

have a serial number imbedded so the manufacturer - or even the

authorities - can track its progress through the distribution chain.

*The FBI was able to trace the Ryder truck used in the Oklahoma City bombing

from a number stamped on the rear differential housing! The fuzz was at the

rental office that owned the truck within an hour or so after the blast. And

Microsoft has way more resources than the FBI...
