Question Folder Structure Best Practices

Recommended Posts

I have two partitions on my disk (W2k3 machine). The first is the SYSTEM

(OS)partition and the second DATA. I was wondering if there are any best

practices of organizing the folder structure of the second partition

D/\Apps??? D:\Programs???

Thanks

Re: Question Folder Structure Best Practices

Hello Guy,

It is more or less you decision, mostly the best solution is to run software

on the system partition itself, so it can operate directly with the operating

system. If you have some apps that need a lot of additional space (web apps),

then you can install it better on d-drive. We did so for our webpage. Also

it is recommended for Active Directory sysvol and ntds folder. For print

spooling with a lot of printers installed on a server it sometimes also is

best practise, because the spooler needs for every file that is in the print

queue a lot more space then the actual file size.

Best regards

Hello Meinolf,

Many thanks for the info.

My c partition (system) is +-16GB, i suppose this is sufficient for some

extra sw, besides the already installed OS, like sql server, sharepoint

services

I wouldn't bet on the 16g being large enough for a lot of applications

on a windows server. Anything that will grow (SQL server, sharepoint)

may exceed the size, especially if you take hotfixes and patches into

consideration as well. Just a thought from the sidelines.

Hello Guy,

SQL can grow up really fast depends on the database that will be filled by

your users. Also sharepoint can grow up, so first check the recommended space

for it and also think about service packs and hotfixes that has to be installed

for Operating system and all applications.

Re: Question Folder Structure Best Practices

Does that mean I need to re-install my server (augment system space)? Or is

there an alternative by using the D partition for Sql Server, Sharepoint?

In either case what is the best solution?

thanks.

I forgot to mention in my previous e-mail: Sql Server I mean the software NOT

the databases.

Re: Question Folder Structure Best Practices

Hello Guy,

For a SQL full installation you need round 1GB diskspace according to this:

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/enterprise/sysreqs.mspx

The databse you can also locate on a different disk/drive, but better ask

this questions in a SQL NG.

For a Sharepoint full installation you need round 3GB diskspace according

to this:

http://technet2.microsoft.com/Office/en-us/library/4d88c402-24f2-449b-86a6-6e7afcfec0cd1033.mspx?mfr=true

Re: Question Folder Structure Best Practices

hello Meinolf,

Based on the information on my question I decided to re-install my server.

To avoid the same problem (too less system disk space) can you give a

recommendation as to how divide a 160GB disk into two partitions (one for

SYSTEM and one for DATA)?

Thanks.
