User created desktop shortcuts disappearing after reboot

Recommended Posts

Hi,

We are experiencing a problem whereby a user creates a shortcut to a file or

folder and saves it to the desktop. The users shuts down the pc at the end

of the day. When the users logs in the next morning (or reboots) the

shortcuts previously created have now disappeared.

This does not happen when a shortcut is created by a software installation.

It also does not happen when you create a 'Network Place' in My Network

Places and copy the 'shortcut' to the desktop.

Has anyone seen or experienced this before?

Thank you in advance!!

A few things I would try:

I. Check for malware. Try one of these Virus Removal Tools:

Avast! One tool for any current virus

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html

Symantec Virus Removal Tools

http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response/removaltools.jsp

F-Secure Virus Removal Tools

http://www.f-secure.com/download-purchase/tools.shtml

Kaspersky Virus Removal Tools

http://www.kaspersky.com/removaltools

II. Do a search for the missing icon. If located, move it to the

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop folder, or just create the

shortcut and copy it there.

III. Right-click the Desktop, hover over "Arrange Icons By", "Show

Desktop Icons" should be checked.

What happened when you searched for the missing shortcuts? Were they

available in a different folder? What folder?

This thread was dated 4 months ago so my earlier posts are no longer

available (without work). Did I suggest these tweaks?

It could be that the user account is damaged. As a test, you might add

another user and see if the new user is allowed changes to the Desktop.

Since there are a few shortcuts that are allowed, I wonder if it's a

permissions issue.

I will try the other user suggestions.

The only shortcuts that are allowed are ones created by software installs.

Another thought.. are you running Teatimer (part of Spybot), or other

software that could be preventing changes?

Re: User created desktop shortcuts disappearing after reboot

No, no spybot/teatimer.

I'm on a Corporate Domain, software such as that is not needed.

Thanks,
