Hello there, if anyone can give me any help on this annoying problem then it will be appreciated - but if any help is given could you please keep it fairly simple as I'm not overly advanced at fixing computer problems!!!Any help though would be fantastic.

What's happening is I boot up my machine, it gets to the welcome screen where you have your user accounts. I click on the only one that I have, which is a jointly named account for myself and my wife, and then it says starting windows. The wallpaper that I have displayed on my desktop is breifly flashed for a few seconds, with no icons showing on the desktop. It then says logging off and saving settings, and it puts me back onto the welcome screen, with our account. We can't get any further. I've tried logging onto safe mode, but it does the same there too. I've had this problem before years ago with another pc, but back then I did a reformat. I'd rather not in this case though, as I've got loadsa of files on my computer that I wanna keep!!! Please help before I chuck it out of me window lol

sounds like you have a corruption in winlogon.exe.

try rebooting the pc and constantly tappin f8, choose boot into safe mode,,if you can get into safe mode do a system restore.(if you dont know how to post back).....

the olny other thing to do is try a repair install boot from the xp cd (make sure bios is boot from cd rom,,,at startup tap "delete key) change boot device to cdrom..

wack ya cd in and restart boot from in.....it will go through normal setup rubbish,,,,,press r when promtped to do a repair install .not r to boot to recovery console...

this will thenn re-install xp over itself.leaving your data intact.

let me know if my answer ia too complex i will try my best too simplfy it.

sorry for any typos i have been up since 5 am.........

I was thinking about doing that but have been trying to find other ways or possible solutions as to possible fixes. I've been looking around the net for solutions and have tried the 'last known good configuration' which didn't work. Then I came across a site which a few people seemed to have the same problem as me. They mentioned booting up windows with the cd, going to recovery, then typing in 'cdsystem 32' and then copying userinit.exe and wsaupdater.exe to your computer. I tried that, but that didn't work, even though they've had exactly the same problem. Any ideas with that? Because the last time my machine was working was on Sunday, and it was lagging like hell, so I did a scan with adaware to remove some stuff and since it hasn't logged on. According to microsoft.com they say that a common problem with adaware is that it removes the wsaupdater.exe and then when u try and log on, you can't!!!So I thought my case could have been connected with that, but as I say, I've tried what they said, but to no avail. U think a repair install is the best bet then? Will it return all my internet favourites etc back to it's original state? I've got loads of sites in my favourites that took me ages to find would be gutted if I had to lose all them - as I will be if I lose everything on my machine full stop!!! Oh and by the way, the language was easy to understand lol
