Guest Juneday Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 Our domain has DC's with Windows server 2003 SP2 on them we have started purchasing machines with 2003 R2 on them and I have a couple of questions. 1. Can we promote a 2003 R2 server to a DC in an environment with 2003 SP2 DC's? We don't have enough licenses to upgrade all of our DC's so that would not be an option. 2. If number 1 is not possible can we join a 2003 R2 server to a domain with 2003 SP2 DC's?

Win 2k3 R2 is just Win 2k3 SP 2 with some "feature" updates. > 1. Can we promote a 2003 R2 server to a DC in an environment with 2003 SP2 > DC's? First you would have to update the schema to support the new features of R2 by running adprep from the second CD of the R2 set. Then you would install the R2 features only on the servers you want to use the updated features on, by running setup2 from the second disk of the R2 set. > 2. R 2 is just Win 2k3 SP2 with a second disk that has files to update certain features of Win 2k3 Sp2. hth DDS | "Juneday" <Juneday@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:58F5AB52-1E93-453B-9C9C-E4054C98BE4F@microsoft.com... > Our domain has DC's with Windows server 2003 SP2 on them we have started > purchasing machines with 2003 R2 on them and I have a couple of questions. > > 1.
