Stand by/Sleep mode

My recently built desktop computer will not go into standby/sleep mode. It

progresses through the screen saver part, but instead of shutting down it

pops back to the active desktop mode and remains there indefinitely.

 

This is a new computer I built a short time back, using a Gigabyte

GA-P35-DS3L motherboard with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. It has two 1 GB

DDR2 memory sticks and is running Windows XP Pro SP 2. In general this

computer works very well, but I can not get it to go into sleep mode. It has

a 500 GB Western Digital hard drive and is no where near the point of being

short of disk space or memory.

 

I have opened Display Properties > Screen Saver Tab and set the Screen Saver

to; Wait 10 minutes. I have set the Power Options to; Turn off monitor;

After 15 minutes, and; Turn off hard drives; After 20 minutes.

 

It seems to be going through this proces and the time intervals seem right

but when it gets to the point where it should shut down or go into sleep

mode it pops back to the regular desktop view and is fully alive,

indefinitely.

 

What else can I try? Thanks, Gordon

Does your BIOS support it?

Antares,

If you've already been there and done that, then forgive me but what I'd do

is go to the Gigabyte website and check for 1)Bios update, 2) new drivers.

This computer did go into sleep mode and I suppose that indicates the BIOS

supports it. But, a couple of weeks ago my hard drive failed and I had to

install a new hard drive. This meant doing a complete re-install of my OS

and all my client software. No other hardware was changed and in fact the

failed hard drive was replaced with an exact same make/model/size hard

drive. Nothing has changed except the software/setup changes. Somewhere in

that process I killed the provisions for sleep mode. Now I can't find this

error and correct it.

 

This computer goes into screen saver, then starts to go ito sleep mode but

blinks and comes back to fully active desktop, then remains in thsi state

for hours (overnight) if I don't turn it off.

Karl, thanks for this suggestion. I haven't tried doing a BIOS update, yet,

but I may have to go that route. I still think this is a Windows XP problem.

This same computer did its standby/sleep/hibernate funcitons as it should

before the original hard drive failed, a couple of weeks ago, and I had to

install a new hard drive, then reinstall my OS and all my client software.

 

The thing that's really strange is that the Power Options Properties window

in Control Panel doesn't show the System Standby or the System Hibernate

options at the bottom of this window. The Turn off monitor and the Turn off

hard disks options are there, as they should be but the other two are

missing. Also there is no Advanced tab on this window.

 

Something must have gone wrong when I was installing Windows XP Pro, and now

that I've downloaded and installed SP2 and a number of other on-line updates

I am reticent to try a re-install from my Windows XP CD.

 

Any suggestions as to how I might get Windows XP to reset these?
