Not including a warning that SP3 shouldn't be installed on a production machine

is irresponsible. Just FYI.

Release Candidate

Microsoft's way to hide that it is still just another BETA release.

Enjoy the voluntary beta testing.

The download details page does that.

Re: Release Candidate 2 For Windows XP Service Pack 3 Is Now Available 2 The General Public.

Colin,

With all due respect, I stand by my original response. It cannot be stressed

enough that SP3 is not a finished product. Many of the users looking for help on

these newsgroups have no idea what "Release Candidate" and "Beta software" mean.

Neither the OP or the web site he posted make mention of this fact. While you're

correct that the instructions section of the download site includes a warning,

it's a weak one.

I may be wrong, but it's my opinion that someone taking the OP's advice and

installing SP3 will end up with their main computer hosed. And if you think the

OP will be around to help them get back in business, check out some of his

contributions to the Vista General newsgroup.

All I said was Microsoft puts the appropriate disclaimers on the Downloads

Details pages. Don't overreact either.

MAY BE OFF TOPIC:

We OEM WinXP where I work. The latest WinXP OEM package is "WinXP

SP2c" previously it was "SP2b." The OEM (OPK notification) Program

sent a notice that when using "SP2c" package you had to redo the OEM

install image.

I wonder if the SP2c is equivalent to SP3 or just SP2 with all updates

included. Anyone know?

SP3 contains changes to some functionalities and a few new functionalities

(mostly networking ) that are not addressed in any SP2x. The best way to

assess this is to review the white paper on what is new (not covered by just

being up to date with WU):

Updates, HotFixes, were slip-streamed into the SP2 build.

This is an XP General newsgroup. Discussions are not OT. The sniping that

goes on here is what is OT.

Yes RC = Release Candidate = BETA

From the "Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2" page,

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=114f3599-12af-42b2-aab1-b969a62c68a7&DisplayLang=en

"Please visit the Windows XP SP3 TechCenter to provide feedback on

this beta release."

Also: "Windows XP Service Pack 3 will be offered on Windows Update

when Service Pack 3 releases in the first half of 2008."

You may want to download the SP3 Overview PDF from this page:

No, RC=Release Candidate=Pre-Release software but not all pre-release

software is still in beta stage. You are using "beta" as a perjorative.

There is no need to do that.

Did you note the exact quote from the download page. I copy-pasted the

phrase. It is Microsoft calling RC a BETA.

They do NOT call the download "RC2 BETA" which would be consistent

with your interpretation.
