Question about SP3 download size

I have a question.

After reading some overheated puff about this new "Windows XP SP3 RC2", I want to try it.

But my connection is limited, which means if I exceed the data allowance, my connection will

slow down. So, is there a way to get a smaller setup file for SP3?

Thank you.

This isn't the place to ask, but the answer is almost certainly no. It

won't be on the Windows Update servers till after it's gone gold, so the

only option is the full file.

If you want it, find another system that doesn't have a limited connection,

perhaps a friend in an office or an internet cafe, and burn it to CD. You

can then share this CD with others who want to try this pre-release version,

and accept the risks.

You will likely also have to remove it prior to installing the "gold"

release version.

Unless you are a PAID Beta tester -- Don't!

Wait until it is formally released.

Questions about SP3 should be posted to this forum.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)

http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=2010&SiteID=17

That said, the current release candidate of SP3 should only be installed on a

test system. If you want to roll the dice, be my guest. When you encounter

problems with your system, don't say you weren't warned.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2 via Windows Update

Good luck

Beta testing of Microsoft software should ONLY be performed by paid Beta Testers.

Beta testing should ONLY be performed on non-production computers and should NEVER be

performed by the casual PC user based upon the Chaos and Complex Systems in a Computing

Platform postulate.

Service packs are cumulative. That means you get everything include

in prior service packs and all (or most) updates or patches after the

last service pack. There is no "incremental" service pack that

includes only the changes rolled up into that service pack that are

NOT included in prior service packs. Again, service packs are

cumulative. Each one has everything from before and new stuff, too.

So are you going to save an image of your hard disk partition(s) to

ensure that you can remove SP-3 when you do find problems? Are you

going to test the service pack within a virtual machine? Or are you

looking forward to reformatting the partition(s) and doing a fresh

install of the OS during which your computer is unusable until you

reinstall all your applications, too, and then go through all that

configuration and tweaking again?

Re: Question about SP3 download size

Sorry, Patrick, but that is not true. The file downloaded for RC2 (which

went on the public site yesterday) is only a herald file and changes a

registry key so that the upgrade can be offered by WU. Then WU will

download only what the user requires. On an SP2 system that is fully

patched to date the download will be about 65MB. On an SP1 system that has

never been patched the download will be 300+ MB.

Re: Question about SP3 download size

Bad information, not researched. MS is distributing a registry patch that

you run and the sp3 express install shows up in WU.

Who are you to make these rules? RC2 is public and available for everyone.

It's a well intended advice!

Do you know what beta testing of computer software is all about?

Why ask HERE? You are asking about unsupported, unreleased, not fully

tested BETA software. It is off topic HERE so take this elsewhere

Re: Question about SP3 download size

If you are up-to-date on your Microsoft updates, the download is less than

60MB.

PABear has suggested you can get a SP3 CD when SP3 is publicly released. It

isn't F-R-E-E (There's a S/H charge) but the fees are probably nominal.

As far as the "net nannies" blathering on about what can or cannot be

discussed here - disregard them.

This is a public newsgroup about WindowsXP for general questions. If it is

beta software, download at your own risk.

Just like there was an administrative update for SP2 (EXE file ~260MB) that is available as

a download I will wait until there is an administrative update for SP3 (expected ~310MB).
