tonksy Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 hi guys, ive been having a problem with a graphics card i bought for a few weeks now. its a nvidia geforce fx5900 (rubbish i know but i only want to play 1 game on it, so is good enough for my needs) the problem is whenever i try to run the game it crashes on the load screen and i cannot play the game, also i get graphical issues now and again (lines down the screen etc..) at first i thought it was my power unit didnt have enough power so i bought a 500w psu and still the problem persists any help would be HUGELY appreciated (i have the newest drivers 2) if u need any other info please ask :) Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Horizontal lines (or any lines for that matter) when playing anything video related is attributed to GPU heat - have you cleaned the GPU fan recently, if not then do that and check that your system has enough air flowing through it Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
tonksy Posted December 14, 2009 Author Posted December 14, 2009 hi dalo, thanks for responding. i gave it a good blow before i put it in lol, my pc seems cool, i have removed the card and the temp is: motherboard 25c (75f) cpu 25c (75f) aux 22c (72f) Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Is there a fan on that one or is it passive (a heat sink) on the GPU? Its definately heat, from either the GPU core or the RAM on the GPU, unfortunatley its not that easy to diagnose which unless you remove the Heatsink and reapply thermal paste and see if the problem goes away. tonksy Posted December 14, 2009 Author Posted December 14, 2009 (edited) i think it is overheating, it was quite warm when i removed it. theres a fan on the card this is it: Eight-Way GeForce FX 5900XT Shootout :: Articles :: www.hardwarezone.com® unfortuantly i have no thermal paste :( i tried to remove the fan to look at it and give it a good clean (as ive read on many posts tht people having the same problem as me have fixed it by simply cleaning it) but i cannot get it off Edited December 14, 2009 by tonksy Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 what did you use to clean the GPU? You need to use compressed air in short sharp bursts. NOT VACUME CLEANERS  (Vacume cleaners produce static, not good for Electrical components) Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.

tonksy Posted December 14, 2009 Author Posted December 14, 2009 card overheating, what should i do? well title explains it really, whenever i start a game it crashes and i really have no clue about what i should do, i think its overheating anyways (have tried loads of other things to no effect) if you could help you would be a life saver Quote
Match Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 are all the fans working? have you cleaned the inside from dust? is the PC placed so that it has a cool air supply? (away from radiators) Quote
tonksy Posted December 14, 2009 Author Posted December 14, 2009 hi match, thanks for responding. all the fans are working (the fan on the card seems a bit slow dunno if thats normal) i dont know if or how to remove the fan to clean it best i done is blow into it lol, this is the card Eight-Way GeForce FX 5900XT Shootout :: Articles :: www.hardwarezone.com® pc has been cleaned inside,an is on my desk near the floor in my room (where its freezing :) Quote
Match Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 looking at the pictures it looks like there are two screws holding the top cover on, once removed that should allow you to remove the fan. but not ever having one or taking one apart I can't be sure about that, so its a proceed at your own risk on that But first if you tell us what Motherboard you are using you may be able to get a utility to check on the fan speed, and if your lucky it may be able to give you temps as well but thats all dependant on compatability Quote
tonksy Posted December 14, 2009 Author Posted December 14, 2009 the 2 screws just remove the small metal frame unfortunatly, dunno if im missing anything but all the screws i seen have been removed and it just wont budge, my motherboard is intel rexburg 2 d845gerg2 Quote
Match Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 ok try this, don't know if it will monitor the GPU though  Intel® Active Monitor Download link if you can't find it is ;) Software License Agreement Quote
RandyL Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 I have merged two threads on this matter as they are related. I sincerely hope that this does not cause too much confusion. Dalo Harkin Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Tonky, Buy some compressed air and use that - its the only thing you should really use for hard to reach places in a PC and can be picked up on the net for around £1.50 per tin Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
