I had a similar problem once caused by malware on my machine. In the end I had to reformat the drive and change my IP address to fix it.

Before you do anything so drastic though try scanning for malware, restarting all your equipment and calling your cable company.

I would also suggest turning your firewall back on, otherwise you are asking for trouble.

I definately think that you should do a VERY thorough spyware scan.

Try something like "Ad-aware" from download.com Its free :D

You may also like to know that windows xp reserves 20% of your bandwidth for QoS services. I've lost the program to help turn this off now though after switching to linux.

You can disable QoS (quality of service) by going into Network Connections and selecting Properties of your LAN. Untick and remove Quality of Service.

Another possibility is that your ISP's DNS servers (where it translates google.com into a machine IP address like 123.123.123.123) are being slow. You could try using alternative DNS servers, such as those of OpenDNS: Changing DNS on Windows XP.

You will have to close your browser and reopen it for the changes to take effect.

Hi, from a non technical person, I found this topic quite interesting!

Is the figure of 20% for QOS accurate?

And is it safe to change the DNS Servers?

Rgds,

Brian

It is accurate, but not always used.
