Defragmentation

My computer crashed 3 months ago and had use the restore disc that came with

my computer. The computer works ok now except for deframentation. I have just

installed Windows Live One Care which seems operate ok. Did a tune up and

during the tune up it supposedly defrags the disc, however under the heading

it states "Unknown error prevented tune-up from performing this task. Try

running tune up again". This was one of the reasons that I tried the 90 day

free trial of this Windows Live One Care.

Previously ,prior to installing Windows Live One Care I had found this

problem when going to defragmentation on my computer. I had hoped One Care

would eliminate this problem but it did not.

When I go to defrag my computer and click "analyze" a dialog box comes up

which states " Defragmentation has been aborted due to inconsistencies that

were detected in the file system. Please run CHKDSK or SCANDISK on (C:) to

repair these inconsistencies then run disc defragmentation again". I ran the

CHKDISK several times and went back to the defragmentation and clicking on

"analyze" I keep getting the same dialog box. Thus CHKDISK doesn't do

anything to repair the problem.

Checking the log file on Windows Live One Care re the defragmentation

attempt it stated "This task was not performed because of an internal error".

Any help with this problem woud be appreciated.

Thank you

Re: Defragmentation

Did you run chkdsk /r or just chkdsk?

Re: Defragmentation

Chkdsk has two different modes, Read-Only and Fix or Repair. Unless you

ran Chkdsk C: /F (or) /R then the Chkdsk did not make any corrections to

the drive. To gain exclusive use of the drive Chkdsk /F /R must run prior to

XP loading it's Graphic Interface. To run Chkdsk with this mode.

Click Start, Run (Type) Cmd [Enter]

>Chkdsk C: /F

.....can only be done at boot would you like...

Answer Y, reboot machine

NOTE: Chkdsk with F/ or /R can and sometimes removes data in the course

of fixing problems. DO NOT run Chkdsk in a repair mode unless

your data is backed up and verified.

Re: Defragmentation

I was not aware that there was something else othwer than chkdsk which is

what I ran. Mr. Mccarty's response and yours indicated otherwise. I'm a bit

confused on Mr. Mccartys response and will have to look at it further.

Confused as to what I have to save to prevent further problems. Will advise

Mr. Mccarty also.

Thank you

Re: Defragmentation

Thank you for your response. I was not aware of the chkdsk variations. I just

entered chkdsk. I have two questions for you since I am not much more than a

novice here and the questions that I will ask may look dumb to you.

1. Use the chkdsc prior to XP loading graphic interface. What is graphic

interface and how do I recognize it so I can do chkdsk (F) before it occurs?

2. Do not run chkdsk repair mode unless data is backed up and verified. What

data are we talking about. Is this something that I have to put on a CD? Do I

have to set a restore point on my computer?

Sorry if you are frustrated with me but am in the learning phase here

obviously.

Thank you for your assistance. Will wait for your response before I venture

further.

Re: Defragmentation

Everybody starts somewhere with PCs, so no apology is necessary.

Windows Graphic User Interface is just a technical term for the screen

and the clickable things you can do with it. Windows boots in phases

which is why you see the XP Flag before the desktop appears. Many

things use the disk drive while windows is running. Chkdsk with a Fix

or Repair needs to exclusively use the drive with no other app or driver

opening/accessing files.

Chkdsk with /F or R must be queued up to run in the period before

the desktop ( GUI ) appears. To do this:

Click Start, Run ( Type ) Cmd [Enter]

>Chkdsk C: /F [Enter]

Answer Y to perform at next boot.

Reboot the computer.

Backups are critical, a hard drive has NO/ZERO permanency about it.

Any drive can fail at any time. Data on the drive can also get corrupted

without the drive physically failing. This is what is going on with your PC.

Chkdsk respects no data, it just fixes the problems. Before you turn loose

a Chkdsk C: /F you need to make sure your personal data is protected.

This includes My Documents, ( which holds Music/Pictures ) and also

your email storage modules.

A large % of PC users don't understand the risks of working without

proper backups. There is a an old saying of "It's not a matter of if, but

when" your hard drive fails or other issues cause you to loose data.

Perhaps it would help us if you would tell us how you are running chkdsk

because it can be run from the "My Computer" display or it can be run from

cmd.

There is only one program involved. Chkdsk /r tells chkdsk to repair any

file system errors that it finds. The "/r" part of the command is passed to

chkdsk.

If you leave off the "/r" then you are telling chkdsk to just check but not

repair.

Thank you for your patience and taking the time to explain the questions that

I had. I will try to save the info mentioned and then try the chkdsk (F) and

see what happens.

Thank you.

Actually the /r parameter says to do the repair (performed by the /f

parameter) AND check the sectors are readable on the hard disk. /f is

sufficient to repair the corrupted file system. /r fixes the files

AND scans the sectors for reliable reading of them.

Run "chkdsk /?" to find out what the parameters do.

Re: Defragmentation

Sorry for the delay in getting back. Have been trying to backup as much as I

can before I proceed further. I ran chkdsk via clicking on run and entering

chkdsk if I remember correctly. Not being aware of the "f" or "r" adder it

was not added. I did not use "cmd" or my computer since I did not know how to

use it or look for it on my computer. Still looking at other contributor's

responses and trying to get an understanding of which to use "f" or "r'. Your

assistance is appreciated and look foreward to hearing from you.

Re: Defragmentation

Thank you for your response and your explanation of the "f" and "r' part of

chkdsk. I clicked on run and entered the chkdsk /? as you advised. When I

clicked on "ok" there was a flash of a black screen for about 1/2 second and

it was gone, so no luck with that. Look foreward to hearing from you.

'chkdsk' is a DOS-mode program. It has no fancy GUI to display a

window on a GUI desktop. You run it at the command line. DOS-mode

programs may open their own console window but few do. You open a DOS

shell (cmd.exe) which creates a shell with its own console window.

When you exit the shell, its console window closes. Load the

command-line interpreter (cmd.exe) to create a DOS shell that opens

its own console window, run the 'chkdsk' program to see its output

within that console window. When 'chkdsk' exits, the console window

remains open because the shell for the command interpreter (cmd.exe)

is still loaded. When you are done, 'exit' or close the console

window for the DOS shell for the command-line interpreter.

Re: Defragmentation

Instead of running it in the Run box, type "cmd" in the run box and hit

Enter. In the command window that opens type "chkdsk /?" and hit Enter.

You will see the list.

Thank you Colin for the info. Following your instruction I was able to see

the list without problem. Everything is easy when you know how, but very

frustrating when you don't ! Thank you.

Re: Defragmentation

Hi Mr. McCarty. I have followed your directions after backing up my files as

best I could and then used the chkdsk C: /F and it cleared my defragmentation

problem. I then did a defragmentation and it worked fine. I rechecked it

again to-day and it worked fine. I had another problem with Roxio easy cd/dvd

creator 6 that I had posted under the video forum but did not get any

response other than one which really did not address the problem. This

posting was 2/21/08. When I eject a disk the computer shuts down and

restarts. The roxio itself works fine. I researched the web and found that

media player 11 causes the problem and also IE 7. I removed media player 11

and rolled back to media player 9 however the problem is still there. I then

re-installed media player 11. IE 7 I did not remove. A dialog box comes up

after restart and advises that windows has recovered from a sderious error

which is apparantly something to do with a driver, however the drivers are

supposedly ok. Have decided to just put up with the problem. I had hoped the

chkdsk would rectify the problem. More importantly the defragmentation now

works ok. I would like to thank you for your kind assistance with this

defragmentation problem and also how to go about the chkdsk proceedure. The

windows live one care also works fine during a tune up and checks the

defragmentation ok. Thank you again for your assistance.

Re: Defragmentation

I have run the chkdsk F sucessfully and it cleared my defragmentation problem

just fine. I also did a defragmentation and it worked fine. I also ran a tune

up on the windows live one care and it checked out the defragentation without

problem. I had hoped that it would clear a problem with my roxio easy cd/dvd

creator 6 where when I eject a disc the computer shuts down and restarts. The

roxio itself operates fine though. Will just live with it. Thank you again

for your assistance.

Re: Defragmentation

Hi Jim. A note to advise you that I did the chkdsk F and it worked fine and

cleared the defragmentation problem. I did a defragmentation and it worked

fine also. The windows live one care also worked fine on checking the

defragmentation during a tune up. I had hoped that it would also clear a

problem with the Roxio easy cd/dvd creator 6.Although it works just fine the

problem is that when I eject a disc the computer shuts down and restarts. The

chkdsk did not clear this problem, however will live with it as long as the

defragmentation problem has been resolved. Thank you for your assistance with

this problem, it is much appreciated.

Re: Defragmentation

I have done a chkdsk F and it cleared my defragmentaion problem. Ran a

defragmentation and it worked just fine. Also ran the Windowslive one care

tune up and the defragmentation section of the tune up worked fine also. It

did not clear a problem with the roxio easy cd/dvd creator 6 that shuts down

my computer and restarts it when I eject a disc however I can live with it

since the roxio itself works ok. Thank you for your assistance with this

defragmentation problem, it is appreciated.
