SP3 RC2 Update - "INTERNAL ERROR OCCURRED"

Recommended Posts

Hi...

Windows XP Home - fully up-to-date, trying to install SP3 RC2, but it fails

with "INTERNAL ERROR OCCURRED". Any ideas on how I can find out what's

causing this?

Worst case scenario, I won't install it right now - but how would I then go

about having Windows Update NOT recognize this as an update?

Thanks!

Hide the update.

So why not configure Windows Update to NOT show beta versions of

software? Use the Change Settings link to deselect "Show beta

products".

I did, but I haven't received a reply yet. I included logs.

As for hiding the BETA updates, yes...I can and will do that, but I'd really

like to see what is causing this SP3 RC2 update to fail.

What kind of computer are you trying to install on?

Re: SP3 RC2 Update - "INTERNAL ERROR OCCURRED"

I'm trying to install on a DELL Dimension 8300.

I have posted all kinds of log info on that forum link that "Pa Bear" gave

elsewhere in this thread.

Furthermore, I'm not seeing any way to "hide" this update in Windows Update.

Again, that's secondary - I'll like to try to get to the bottom of why this

update is not working.

Here's that forum link:

Thanks...

It was and IS deselected, but this update keeps showing up.

Re: SP3 RC2 Update - "INTERNAL ERROR OCCURRED"

At this point I suggest that you uninstall SP3, do a repair install of XP,

and bring the system back up to date. At that point make an image backup of

the system drive and then try SP3 again. That should take you less time

than its taking for a reply on the other forum, although the timestamp on

that post is less than 24 hours ago.

Re: SP3 RC2 Update - "INTERNAL ERROR OCCURRED"

The reason I suggest this is that I had a similar problem with installing a

service pack on one of my computers recently and the resolution given me by

MS Product Support Services (after considerable research on their part) was

to do a repair install to fix one or more corrupt system files that they

deduced was causing the problem. Apparently they were right because I had

no more issues installing the service pack or further updates.

Re: SP3 RC2 Update - "INTERNAL ERROR OCCURRED"

Wipe & reload, then think twice before installing beta software on your

personal or a production machine.

Does it let you hide that update (and does it then stay hidden)?

Something might be screwed up with your local update catalog database.

As I recall, the local update catalog is stored under

%windir%\system32\catroot2. To force a reset of the catalog, you

rename that folder to, say, catold and then revisit the Windows Update

site. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798 (method 3; the 'ren'

command is shown wrapped).

Deselecting does not hide the update. It just deselects it for the current

WU session. To hide an update, check the box on left for the update and

right click on the update's description. The context menu has View Details,

Copy Details, and Hide Update.
