Server reload - profiles need preserving

Have a client who is about to receive a new SBS server and have their

current TS reloaded. I need some help on how to preserve the TS profiles so

I can import/assign them to the same users that get recreated when we

install the new SBS server. Also need to know if the TS profiles will

contain things like outlook email signatures.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi - I suggest you pull back a second. If you've got an AD domain now, and

this TS box is a member server, you can preserve both AD & your profiles

when you migrate to a new SBS box, and not have to do all this messing

around with profiles or other stuff. Post in

microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs - and you'll probably get lots of

advice, one of which may be to check out http://www.sbsmigration.com for the SBS

portions.

You *really* don't want to set up a parallel SBS server & entirely new AD

unless there's some terribly compelling reason to scrap what you've got.

That said - if you're bent on this course come hell or high water, you might

mention whether you have TS profile paths specified for your users in

ADUC...if so, copying the entire parent folder over to another server &

fixing the security on it, then re-pointing the new users at their old

paths, will often work. IIRC Outlook e-mail signatures are in the users'

documents & settings\application data folder. I always redirect that (and My

Documents, and Desktop), and the same advice applies.

You can do the same thing as you do on a workstation. Go to Control

Panel, System, Advanced, User Profiles.

The user will first have to logon to the new TS box, then you can

import the User Profile over from the old box within User Profiles.

Alternately, you can do a manual copy and reset the NTFS

permissions...not as clean but it works. TS profiles do contain email

signatures in AppData.
