Volume icon disappeared... Windows fix doesn't work

Recommended Posts

Posted

The volume icon has disappeared from the tray on the bottom of my screen.

When I go to Control Panel and check Place Volume Icon on Taskbar, I receive

the following error message: "Windowns cannot display the voloume control on

the taskbar because the Volume Control Program has not been installed. To

install, use Add/Remove Programs...".

I have followed the steps recommended by Microsoft here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319095/en-us

However, when I enter the final command (expand sndvol32.ex_

system_root\system32\sndvol32.exe), I receive the following error message:

"Can't open output file: system_root\system32\sndvol32.exe."

In short, the Windows fix does not seem to have worked. How do I fix this?

You are supposed to replace "system_root" with the path and folder

name where the Windows system files are located (generally

C:\Windows):

e.g.

expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

Are you replacing system_root with the proper path as stated in the article?

<quote>

Note that there is a space between "ex_" and "system_root" in this command.

For example, if your computer's CD-ROM drive is drive E, and the folder that contains

the Windows system files is C:\Windows, type the following lines at the command

prompt (pressing ENTER after each line):

e:

cd i386

expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

</quote>

Re: Volume icon disappeared... Windows fix doesn't work

I tried this also but I get "can't open input file". It seems like my

sndvol32 is totally missing. How can I put the sndvol32 back in?
