So, I'm looking for a new desktop.* Since the arrival of Phreaks Jr. just a few days ago, my current desktop is just too noisy; it's also old (3.02 Ghz HT)

So, I'm looking for a new system. I am guessing I can keep my current SATA II HDD drives and DVD R/W + CD R/W drives, so I've just been focusing on CPU's and cases*for the moment.

I am looking at quad cores and trying to figure out the pro's and cons of the AMD CPU's vs the Intel CPU's.

Apparently, the Intel chipsets have much better benchmarks, but run hotter, but the AMD chipsets have faster buses and generally support more memory.

The most supported*memory I could find on an Intel system in my price range was a max of 8 Gb, while the most supported*memory of the AMD chipset was 32 Gb. and the AMD system was like $400 cheaper and came with a better video card.

Are the Intel chips really that much better? Looking at the price differences, coupled with the FSB rates and supported memory amounts and I am almost compelled to go with the AMD system.

Can someone that knows something about these topics sound back for me please?* Am I thinking about this right or am I way off base?
