Dalo Harkin Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Hi, What exactly do the blue screens say - normally there are stop codes or a specific driver that causes the blue screen. does your blue screen pop up and then disappear if so then do this Start>Control Panel>System> System Properties>Advanced there are then 3 sections of that window - Performance, User Profiles, Startup and Recovery, you want the startup and recovery settings button under System Failure UNTICK automatically restart Then the next time the blue screen appears it will stay on the screen until you write down the information we need above :) Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
scobe Posted December 23, 2009 Author Posted December 23, 2009 Hi mate The blue screen stays & I have to push the off button to start again. I think it was along the lines of memory dump protection, or something to do with memory? But the next time it happens I will copy it all down. steve Quote
Plastic Nev Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Hi Steve, yes please do, or if possible a screen shot, so long as it is easily readable, even a shot from a camera of what shows up. It could save a lot of writing or even miss copying something if there is a lot on the screen. I think also we could do with knowing a bit more about your computer, if you can tell us the make, model number, and if possible how much RAM you have installed. Those details will be helpful for us to go further perhaps. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. maynardvdm Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Hi This looks like a driver issue. You should be able to boot into safe mode and try updating your drivers from there. scobe Posted December 28, 2009 Author Posted December 28, 2009 Hi No new drivers installed. I have gone to safe mode & can't run downloaded programs or system restore from there either. I can't run: My already installed Norton anti virus (stopped running & can't restart) defragment System restore Or any newly downloaded programs (Downloads, but stops before installation is complete) I can still use other non admin programs & the net I am a novice as previously said. How do I update drivers in safe mode? Quote
scobe Posted December 30, 2009 Author Posted December 30, 2009 I have a feeling that this is all to do with crappy Norton anti-virus. I'm going to uninstall Norton First. (It's not running anyway!) I can't believe how fast windows starts now it's not running. Is there anyway I can re install windows without starting from scratch? Run a program that will check to see if windows is complete & running properly? I know it's Christmas, but I seem to have come to a dead end with this. steve Quote

Plastic Nev Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 Hi Scobe, If removing the Norton has helped great, but if still problems you can do one of two options, but you will need a full windows XP disk, not a restore or recovery disk. do you have that disk? One option is known as SFCscannow, this will attempt to sort any bad system files without losing any of your data. The other option and again does need the Windows disk, is a full system repair, this does a full repair of the operating system. Again it will not lose any data, but does need to be done with care in order for that to work. It all hinges on you having that disk. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? scobe Posted December 31, 2009 Author Posted December 31, 2009 (edited) Hi Nev I do have the original XP disc as well as all the other discs that came with the PC. Funnily I put the disc in yesterday to see if I could see anything I could do. I got a message saying that the XP version on my PC was newer than the version on the disc. (Service Pack 3) so not sure if I can use the disc? What do you think mate? steve PS: Still having the other problems Edited December 31, 2009 by scobe Quote
Plastic Nev Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 Oh dear, if both SP2 and SP3 were installed after the first installation from the original XP you get that message and means it won't go any further. I will leave it to others on this as there may be a workround, otherwise it could mean a full new reformat and fresh install of the now old XP. That will lose everything and we don't as yet want that. Not to mention the fact all updates will have to go back in which will take ages. I don't know if it is possible to uninstall SP3 and SP2 to revert the system back to something the old disk can work with, as I say I will leave it for someone who knows if this is possible. Please don't try that without advice as it may mess things totally. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. scobe Posted January 2, 2010 Author Posted January 2, 2010 Cheers Nev Thought that would be the case. Went to add or remove programs. It shows SP3 in there, but there is no option to delete. The other thing I can think of..... Does any one have the latest version of XP for DEll PC's that they could sell or lend me? (Not sure if this is allowed?) Cheers steve Quote
RandyL Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 Sorry scobe. It's complicated but Microsoft licensing rules would make borrowing disks illegal. Besides there is also the issue of the disks being the proper ones for your computer. Not to mention revalidating Windows. If you need disks Dell might be able to supply you for a very nominal cost. I know that doesn't help but I was obligated to say it. Hopefully someone will know the solution you seek. I really hope so. Quote We are all members helping other members. Plastic Nev Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 As well as the above from RandyL, I have a feeling the Windows disk you do have for that machine is only a recovery disk. That means you can only use it to reset the operating system and the rest of the machine back to original factory settings. That of course means losing all your data. if the disk has the DELL name or logo on it, then it is most certainly only a restore disk. The only other option would be to buy a new Windows XP service pack3 disk, (expensive) in order to do a system repair. If at all possible I would be looking at ways to retrieve your data first and back it up on either disks or external drives. If you have access to another computer, and prepared to remove the hard drive, buy an adapter for USB, connect the hard drive to another computer, and then you would be able to transfer or copy the data over to the other computer. That way then, you can reinstall the hard drive, wipe it clean with a reformat, and start again. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here.
