Office 2007 on TS (weird licencing situation)

Hello,

 

I am facing the following situation: in a small company, the management

decided that some documents were to be stored on a TS and accessed by a

small amount (5) of people. These people do have laptops with Office 2007

Pro (OEM) installed.

 

According to

http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/7/7/17745e4a-5d31-4de4-a416-07c646336d94/desktop_application_with_windows_server_terminal_services.doc:

"Scenario 4 (...) The customer does not need to acquire any more Microsoft

Office licenses as long the portable desktops are licensed for the edition,

language, and version of Microsoft Office being accessed. "

 

My interpretation of the situation is that my customer does not need to buy

additional licences, but should obtain a VL CD of Office 2007 in order to

intall it on the TS ? Is there a way to obtain such a CD without buying

licences ?

 

Any clarification would be appreciated.

Have the documents stored in a folder tree on the server. Share the

folder and then map it to a network drive on the clients' machines. Then

they can open the files using their local Office applications. No need

for further licenses. You don't need licenses to store documents on a

hard drive.... You don't even need Terminal Services.

I realize I didn't make myself clear enough. The customer is using network

shares for storing most of its documents. However, a few other documents

must be stored in a separate TS environment (explaining the reasoning

leading to such an implementation would be too long). A user will thus use

Office 2007 installed on its PC to work on most of the documents which are

stored on network shares. If the user needs to work on a few other document,

he must open a TS session to the TS server which contains Office 2007 and

some documents.

You'll have to work hard to convince me that this setup is necessary. It

just doesn't make sense to me, but that's for another day.

 

My opinion is that the management will need to get licenses to run

Office on the TS server. They should get an Open License and the correct

number of Client Access Licenses. This will be the number of computers

(per device) or users (per user) that will be accessing Office on the TS

server....

 

You should consult with MS or a reseller to determine the correct

licenses (and #) that you need...
