Sorry this may seem like a very simple question but here goes:

I've just bought a new PC that comes with windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit pre-installed (and the user liicense key).

Before I get started, I would like to know if I can create a CD/DVD of the OS myself? Or, if not, how can I get a copy of the OS on CD/DVD?

Hi MLM and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help.

Normally these days you can make recovery disks for restoration of your operating system, the instructions for which are different to each manufacturer in some cases, but should have come with your computer. If no instructions are available but that is the sort of disk you are meaning, then can you tell us the make and model of your computer so we can research it for you.

As far as buying a copy of Windows 7, you can obtain one directly from Microsoft or reputable dealers. However you will be paying the full price for either an OEM version, which is really meant for computer builders, or the full version which is quite expensive. When you already have it and just need to make the recovery disks, why spend extra money.

Nev.

Hi,

If you can post the make and model of your machine we should be able to advise the best way to create recovery DVD's. So, for example Acer machines use something called eRecovery to create factory restore DVD's, other manufacturers use different methods.
