Hello everyone, merry Chrimbo and all that jazz.

So, christmas was nice to me this year and I have found myself with around £300 to purchase new goods.

A new motherboard and processor of course! I've needed a new pair for ages and now is the time, *hoping that january sales happen for pc parts*

So, what I am asking of all you tech savvy people here on these forums, is, can you recomend me what is the best buy?

I edit video footage alot, and play games such as MW2, Operation Flashpoint, etc, so I REALLY want to get something powerful, that will last me a while.

I was thinking about an i5/i7 bundle as I have heard Intel are slightly better currently then AMD (at least on the personal computer level). If you people know of any cheap online sites or stores that have a good motherboard and processor bundle (or links to two seperate components that will work together) please let me know!

Things to bear in mind:

WINDOWS 7, 64BIT - max budget: £300 :D I'd like some memory too if possible, DDR3 me thinks!

DXIDAG ATTACHED.

many thanks

Hi, being no expert, but do a bit of video editing myself and find problems with my poor set up, I suggest you look at dual core processing or higher, plus a board that will support the maximum RAM the operating system can use.

You mention games as well so for future expansion you will need perhaps a decent graphics card so PCI Express is the latest type of port needed on the MB as well.

Please do bear in mind you will have problems with the operating system if retaining the original hard drive and OS. It will see a new environment and refuse to boot.

In this case, considering this is an upgrade and not a repair replacement of the motherboard, Windows licensing conditions state that as far as they are concerned, a new motherboard is a new computer, and therefore a new operating system must also be installed with the old one deleted.

Sorry about that bit of bad news, but you do need to consider the extra costs involved in order to remain strictly legal.

Well... it is on the way out, what if i have to *replace* it because it is broken?

you have to phone Microsoft and explain what happened ;) activation will fail and it will give you a big 64 digit alphanumeric code and ask you to phone a number for Microsoft support. and depending on what you say depends on if they will give you a new Key or tell you to buy a new OEM OS.

but for £300 I think you are being a little ambitious, given that the ideal amount of RAM you will need to get the best performance will be 4G

Scan.co.uk: BX80605I5750 - Intel Core i5 750, S 1156, Lynnfield, Quad Core, 2.66GHz, DMI 2.5 GT/s, 8MB Cache, 95W, Retail

Scan.co.uk: Asus P7P55 LX, Intel P55 Express, S1156, PCI-E 2.0 (x16), DDR3 2200(OC), SATA 3Gb/s, SATA RAID, ATX

Scan.co.uk: W1800UX2GP - 2GB (2x1GB) SuperTalent TwinPack DDR3 PC3-14400 (1800MHz) 240 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 7-7-7-21.

so I think you may want to ether look at lowering you spec's to a quad core with DDR2 which would be more realistic with that budget. or preferably save a little longer and Ideally what you are asking for is an i7 system, which you will need about another £150 for.
