Can anyone help, it is simply that a family member has dumped his Desktop on me as it has a problem.

It is manafactured by Iqon & is about 3 years old. It is running Windows Xp Professional with a

Intel Pentium D 2,80ghz chip & 1GB Ram.Also running AVG Anti Virus

The story of how I ended up with it is because he contacted me with a (rogue) program causing him problems.

It was called AntiMalware & is known as a fake program, so I sent him details on how to remove it & a Program

to do it with as recommended by many forums "Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware".

He then contacted me to say he could not do anything with the system & had not installed the above program either, though the

AntiMalware program had also gone after he kept shutting it off when it put up alerts. The system now just locks up.

Now the tower is sat on my desk & heres a quick breakdown (sorry for the pun) of problems I've encountered in the

short time I've had it. Not been able to spend much time on to now due to very busy. So here is a quick breakdown

of issues I've Noticed so far & I am hoping you guys/gals can pleaseeeeee help me???

1. I have tried to install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program but system wON'T RUN IT EVEN (Nothing happens).

2. There is now NO Windows Security Centre Icon in Taskbar & managing to get into Control Panel/Security Centre,

The option to change the way Security Centre alerts me is not available. So can't get it up & running.

3. The System will not let me use system restore to set to an earlier point either. I can get through to choose a

date & move forward to the ready to shut down & restore to a previous setting, Then pressing Next to do it the

system locks up & the screen does not change.

4.The system most of the time locks up as soon as Desktop comes up, so nothing can be done but RESTART!!!!!!

5. I managed to get C Cleaner up & running to stop a lot of the crap he has installed running on start up i.e. Printers,

Google earth, games etc. But this does not seem to help with start up as it still locks up most of the time on start up.

6.Tried running McAfee's STINGER program as well (from a CD disk as the program is a portable no install) as I have found this is usually good at finding virus's. It started but soon ground to a halt after a couple of minutes, then system LOCK UP.

7. Won't Let You install a different Anti virus software either. AVG is locked down not working!!

8. No unusuall processes seem to be running when Windows Task Manager is run as I can see??

So there you have it,that's as far as I've got, due to time constrictions so if you could please please help. I am sure it's that original rogue program AntiMalware or another one that is the problem with it, but not having the time I hope you can help.So if there is another piece of software to get round the problem of trying to run it to remove the asaid issue, I'd be would be most grateful.

ps I have warned him I may have to reinstall Windows & maybe replace his restart Button as I've nearly worn it out!!!

Hi and welcome back.

You certainly are having problems with that one, so far you appear to have done the right things though.

So if you can follow this, and hopefully get it on the machine it will help. I must be fare though it may be a day or two before Chiaz can get to you.

Please download the latest version of HijackThis from Trend Micro and save it to your desktop.

  • Download HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install HijackThis.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in Notepad. Include this log in your next reply.

Notes:

Do not use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.

Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless, or required for your computer to run like it should.

I have installed Windows, now how do I install the curtains? 😄

The Info you requested!!!

This took some getting as the system would not allow me to run HiJack, even in safe mode. I changed the .exe name to get it to run in the end in Safe Mode. I Also got "Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware" to run using the same method. It found quite a bit but not antimalware prog.

I Manually found this using windows search & Did find it in Windows/Prefetch/antimalware.exe (after I renamed it from a .pf file) Malwarebytes then found it & removed it.

The person who owns this computer likes to play games i.e. Poker Games etc. So it is a bit of a mess anyway & he's a bit lax on Security. I managed to defrag the thing last night (Took 3 Hours).

Anyway here's what I hope you wanted:

Hope to hear from you soon.

PS Still can't install AVG 9 as antimalware is on system according to the install program

Hi Wizbuzz.

If you can please wait for our malware expert to see this thread. If he can not get to you soon we will assist you in this matter. Like you said it has some problems but they can be cured.

You have already taken some great steps and we do see the issues. Since you are not a novice can you possibly get HJT to run in normal mode and supply the malwarebytes log file?

Personally I always uninstall all those crap games and poker programs before I even attempt to begin a cleanup. For instance Partypoker. I had a guy install it on my system withought my knowledge. Infections abounded. Dump them all and any suspicious toolbars too.

As noted this machine is not updated and security is lax. IE6/SP2/AVG

Hi Wizbuzz,

A few things before we start....

1. Please Read All Instructions Carefully.

2. If you don't understand something, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.

3. Please do not run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.

4. If you have to go away for an extended period of time, let me know.

5. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear".

(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

===============

Let's have you download ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for downloading and instructions for running the tool:

Go here ======> A guide and tutorial on using ComboFix <====== Go here

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first. This applies to XP Pro and XP Home users only.If you have SP3 installed you will need to use the download meant for SP2.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should get a prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

(1) Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

(2) Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include C:\ComboFix.txt as well as a new HijackThis log for further review, so that we may continue cleansing the system.

Caution: Never run and remove files with Combofix unless supervised by a qualified security analyst who is experienced in the use of Combofix. Misuse can cause serious computer problems.
