System Restore shows blank white window

Recommended Posts

I have been researching this problem but have found no fix. I finally

decided to reinstall per.

http://bertk.mvps.org/html/reinstall.html

But the same condition exists. I am not sure if this is related but when I

try to access my router only a partial screen is displayed with no way to

access anything on router. There are no router issues accessed from other

systems.

If anyone knows of a solution I would be very grateful.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried method 1 in your link and found no problems. Method 2 however seems

to be coming up empty. I searched two machines I have(registry), one with

the problem and one that is fine and I find no such reg key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\{f414c260-6ac0-11cf-b6d1-00aa00bbbb58}\In

procServer32

I navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES and find no CLSID entry

what-so-ever on either system. Now I am really confused.

I have XP Pro SP2 on both systems with all patches installed from Windows

Update.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Thanks but still no help. I was hopeful after reading the posts by others

but I think it must have something to do with the lack of display of my

router window also. I guess I will keep searching. Maybe it is time for an

OS clean install anyway.

If there really is *no* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\ key

with a large bunch of sub-keys, it probably *is* time to reinstall.

What happens if you open regedit, click on "My Computer," and then use

Edit > Find for the string "f414c260" (without quotes)?

That key has to do with JavaScript, so if it's missing or incorrectly

set, there probably will be lots of things that don't work properly.

I get under type REG_SZ and under Data JScript Language. I search two

machines and get no return for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID

One system seems to work fine except for DirectX being an "older version".

Everything else seems ok as far as I can tell. Only one machine will no

longer allow me to run System Restore. I had used it just yesterday

successfully however. I removed a new SATA drive and returned it so I

assumed it might be related to that event. I have had several small

difficulties installing Delorme GPS SW along with SQL Server 2005 Services.

It may be time to clean install on two systems.

Thanks for the tip. I will most likely be doing that but I would like to

find out more about what caused the missing reg keys now found in three of

my systems. I think it might have something to do with some SW applications

that are common to all three computers.

That was one of the first things I tried with no success, thanks.

I now find that I have the same missing registry keys on three systems and

suspect installing SW might be the cause of this. So far there are no other

problems other than the one system restore issue on just one of my systems.

That being the blank white display of the SR menu.

I don't think a simple uninstall of suspected applications will revert

everything back to normal. My plan would be to start with a clean system and

install suspected applications one at a time making sure there is no other

SW present to cause conflicts. Out of the three systems I have installed the

new GPS apps onto all are missing the Reg. key in question but only one

machine has problems. I did remove one new application from a laptop but I

don't think that removal would restore the missing key. I think the System

Restore problem is from another cause other than that one key.

I am just asking since that might have been related to the messed up window.

I was thinking that there may have been a common file caught in error.

That's all.
