hi, I've a new laptop, a pcspecialist enigma Intel core 2 duo 2.2 Ghz T6600, 2Gb ram, ati graphics card, xp pro sp3.

In general use windows runs slow and has obvious lag. My other lappy, a 1.4 celeron with xp home sp2, runs windows faster with no screen lag. I went for a fast machine that can handle graphics, but the new lappy seems slower overall.

Any ideas on speeding things up ? Did a CPU-Z test and result was 1197 MHz.

What Antiviruses are you running, and under system properties (click Start and select Control Panel. From the Control Panel, double-click the System icon) towards the bottom of the window under computer what does it say is the mHz of the CPU?

hi, no antivirus, windows defender and ad aware and a small registry cleaner. First speed was 1.7GHz, 2 mins later when it read 2.19GHz, seems to have spurts of speed then slows.

Window defender is insufficient by itself, get a good antivirus program and a better antimalware program. Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help has a number of suggestions posted.

As for your "small registry cleaner," you are asking for trouble. Is the new laptop still using XP or is your profile still showing the old system. Finally what match is asking you for should not vary. It is telling you what the hardware is and not what it is doing at a given time.

Don't worry about the CPU frequency changes - it uses Speedstep which throttles the CPU when it is idle so you won't see an absolute speed checking it that way.

What reg cleaner have you used - just so we know what is going on. I think with a new machine a reg cleaner probably won't have caused your slowdown issues.

Try running a decent virus and spyware scanner over it and see where it gets to.

Malwarebytes is a good one for spyware, try Avira for viruses.

Clean out your temp files with ATF Cleaner before you start.

Also, have a look in the Event log in the System and Software sections - are there any error entries, particularly in the System log?

Let us know what it finds if anything.
