New Windows XP Pro Product Key

I have the original Windows XP Pro disk for my PC, however when I ran into a

glitch and needed a reformat, the person who repaired my PC used his volume

disk with SP2 on it just for convenience. Ok now on to my question...I just

bought a new product key at from Microsoft and tried to use their tool to

make the change. When I restarted my computer, my AVG antivirus pitched a fit

and said that there was an error and it didn't recognize my license. When I

tried to reinstall it, it said I had another antivirus program

running...which I don't. I did a file search and a program search to see if I

had any other antivirus programs running and could find nothing. I tried

changing the product key twice, I tried uninstalling AVG (after the product

key change), and even though I could find no evidence that I had an antivirus

program running, windows security center said I did. What am I doing wrong,

and what can I do to fix this? I did find info on changing the product key in

regedit, but before I do that wanted to see if I get any input here. It bugs

me that I paid for this and so far can't use it...I had to use system restore

to take it back to where it was. Thanks in advance for any help you can give

me.

AFAIK, the only remedial solution to adopting the proper Windows XP

product key was to have performed a clean installation of Windows XP

that corresponds to the product key. That is, product keys are unique

to specific versions of Windows XP and there is no way that a volume

license version of XP can be re-identified as a single-copy version.

As for AVG, its license number (even for the AVG free) could have

been linked at the time of its original installation to the specific

version of XP at the time.

I wish I would have known before I bought it. I just got tired of updates not

installing because my copy of Windows couldn't be verified as genuine...thats

why I got the new product key. It all worked well and the product key tool

said that it was successfully changed...it was my antivirus that messed up.

No matter what I uninstalled on this thing, the security center said I had

antivirus running. The only other antivirus I have is what came with AT&T

yahoo, but I never installed it and it was still showing as not installed. If

I could get the antivirus to work, I'd be happy lol. Oh well...live and

learn. Thanks for responding.

If AVG is the only application that is acting up in this way, then try

removing it via the Add/Remove Programs applet. Next, run Regedit and

eliminate all trace of AVG from the Windows Registry. Reboot the system

and it might behave as if AVG had never been installed. Finally, do a

clean re-install of AVG.

Thanks so much...I was kind of thinking along these lines but didn't think

about going to regedit to clean it up. I really appreciate the help :) :)
