Guest FUBARinSFO Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 Hi: Please confirm that you can't use ntbackup.exe to restore system from backup (.bkf) files using the Recovery Console in Windows Server 2003. If this is true, is there another way to run ntbackup to restore the system? I've trired ERD Commander 2005 and it is unable to execute this particular external command. It seem strange that the most fundamentally simple method of system restore is unavailable. (This ignores the use of ASR and the complications of creating the diskette if it wasn't created in advance). Thank you in advance for your help. -- Roy Zider
Guest Dave Patrick Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 Re: NTBACKUP.EXE can't be run from Recovery Console Are you talking about the system hive? You can restore the backup to an alternate location then replace the system hive from the recovery console. -- Regards, Dave Patrick ....Please no email replies - reply in newsgroup. Guest FUBARinSFO Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 Re: NTBACKUP.EXE can't be run from Recovery Console Dave: Actually, I was speaking about any .bkf file, not the system hive specifically. Running ntbackup.exe from the Recovery Console would enable me to simply choose what to restore from a variety of backups. So evidently the program ntbackup.exe cannot be executed from within the Recovery Console environment, unfortunately. I did have sort of a workaround for this -- which didn't require me to identify and neutralize the worm that was preventing the system from booting and running in the first place. I booted from a CD of ERD Commander 2005 (which includes networking support) and copied a recent System State .bkf file to another computer. Then from that remote system I mapped the target/problem system as a drive, and restored the SS.bkf to the target/problem system. In other words, a push restore rather than a "pull" local restore. (I haven't checked if Recovery Console has full network support). But all of this would have been unnecessary if I could have simply run ntbackup.exe from the Recovery Console or from ERD Commander 2005 in the first place. I didn't try the restore of the system hive from Recovery Console as you suggest, as I wasn't aware of it at the time. This would have given me a clean system hive, but without any of the subsequent updates, as I understand the descriptions of the method. But it would have given me a working system quickly, I think, and I could have moved on from there. Thanks for the suggestion, and I'll explore it in more detail when I get a free moment. -- Roy Zider
Guest Darrell Gorter[MSFT] Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Re: NTBACKUP.EXE can't be run from Recovery Console Hello Roy, No ntbackup cannot be run from recovery console. There are no executables that are allowed to be run in recovery console. This is a limited recovery method that is limited to using the commands that are supplied. EXE support to run other applications is not supported, nor is win32 support which is what be minimally required to run ntbackup.exe Recovery console is very lightweight and not intended as means to do backup and restore. there are security concerns with this happening as well.
