How to view a registry backup CAB file

Recommended Posts

Posted

I've got a registry file saved in CAB format that I'd like to view. When I

extract the CAB I get the System.dat, User.dat, Win.ini, & Sys.ini files.

How can I convert these files into a REG file that I can read in WordPad or

Regedit ?

REGEDIT is the only standard Windows tool that enables this.

1. Reboot using this particular CAB

(usually done in DOS via SCANREG /RESTORE)

2. Run REGEDIT and export a REG (text) file.

No, no, no!!! Too complicated and too risky. Use LoadHive instead.

Thanks Gary,I'll give it a try. I didn't want to actually load my computer

registry with the CAB file, just read it.

You'll have to unpack the CAB file before using LoadHive on the DAT files

inside.

Garry

Is it safe to be loading all that stuff into my active Registry? I suppose

you just remove the entry when you're finshed looking ?

Or have I misunderstood what this little proggy is doing.

Re: How to view a registry backup CAB file

LoadHive is for NT/2000/XP....it is not for Win98.

Try Regdat v.1.3....it's the fourth item on this page:

Yes, I did some googling yesterday and came up with redat 1.3, which works

extremely nicely. Found what I needed in the registry file using the

shareware version. It's a keeper, that one.
