syncing Windows and Mac Machines

I have two laptops, one running Windows XP and the other one a Mac with the

earlier version of OS X (I think it is Tiger). I'm using MS Office on both

machines and I'd like to sync the data so that the same files appear on both.

Is it possible? If so, how?

Thank you for any information you can give on this.

Put the data files on an External USB drive

Thank you for your suggestion, Bob. I think you are saying that I should

either get an external hard drive or a very large USB Flash drive. I think

that would work, but but given that there are several gigs of files, could

you then recommend a good way of syncing a hard drive or USB flash dive and

my widows machine, so that I could use that third element as the common

syncing element between the other two machines?

Thanks,

Bob

If the only file repository is the External drive, you don't need to

"sync" anything.

Hi Bob,

I would network the two of them together, share a folder on the XP drive

and keep the files in one central location. The Mac will be able to

access the shared folder. Or purchase a network drive and store the

documents there and access them from either laptop.

Re: syncing Windows and Mac Machines

Thanks Terry. I'm not quite sure how to do this, but it sounds like a

solution is emerging. I should have noted that I have manually copied many

but not all of files onto the hard drives of both machines. I'd like to have

both machines stay current with all the files that are both. For this

reason, I think I'd still then need to have some process of routinely

syncing. Would you use the "synchronize" utility found on XP under

"Accessories" to achieve this?

Thanks,

Bob

Hi Bob,

I don't know if syncing between machines is possible without possibly

mapping a drive. And I'm not sure that is the best way to do it, having

two copies on two different machines. But that's just my opinion. The

problem will be that you can only sync one way, XP to Mac, not the other

way, so you will always have to remember to sync on the Windows machine

before modifying files. I believe I offered two options that would work

better for the best reliability.
