unusual behavior

After receiving no response on windowsxp.network_web newsgroup, I turn to

you.

I am running XP SP2. Restarting my puter the normal way only results in the

puter hanging at the "Windows is now shutting down" screen and has to be

cold-started to get it to reboot. Very frustrating. But when I open my

internet connection properties window, click on the disable button, my

computer restarts. Or right-click the connection icon in notification area,

choose disable and my computer restarts. This is not a "once-in-a-while"

problem. It is consistent. As a matter of fact, this is the fastest way to

reboot my puter but not the way it was intended. Disabling traffic is

required during maintenance. What is the procedure to correct this unusual

behavior? Thx.

First, I'd add the Microsoft service, User Profile Hive Cleanup to your

setup. Secondly, since you've abruptly powered off the machine you

might want to run a Read-Only Chkdsk on your Windows volume and

make sure the drive's state isn't "Dirty". If it is Dirty, then you'll need

to

run a more comprehensive Chkdsk with a /R qualifier.

User Profile Hive Cleanup service download here:

I have seen this problem with a network connection (on a LAN card) where

there was no cable plugged in. It eventually *did* shut, but took several

hours.

Do you have a network connection that it is trying to shut down but which

can't respond for any reason?

What the hell is a "puter?" Yes, I know you are referring to your

COMputer, so please, refer to it as such. This is not a chat room,

after all.
