Boot failure with 2nd hard drive connected

Hi, I am seeking help, with trying to help a mate (by phone) with a PC

that failed to boot.

He has an Intel board based P4 running WinXP that has :

a. A SATA hard drive on its own cable,

b. An IDE 2nd hard drive with a DVD Burner on a shared cable.

The OS is on the SATA drive © and has failed to boot (after a normal

shut down).

So far the following has been tried :

1. Booting from the CD and attempts to use the repair console.

(Stuck in "examining C")

2. Installing a fresh WinXP on the 2nd hard drive with the SATA

disconnected.

(successful)

3. Boot with original SATA connected.

(Failed - PC just stops booting)

4. Boot with SATA not connected.

(successful)

BIOS shows both hard drives, and boot sequence has been altered, to ensure

that the IDE drive boots first.

SATA drive has been set to master and slave with no change

What would be the next step, to try and get WinXP to boot with the SATA

drive connected so that files can be recovered/transferred to the IDE

drive (now "C')

TIA for any help

Sounds like the SATA drive has failed. Go to the drive manufacturer's site

and download their diagnostic software (e.g. Seatools if Seagate or Data

Lifeguard if Western Digital) create the selfbooting floppy or CD , boot

from that and run the diagnostics on the SATA HDD that should tell you if

the drive has died.

So why does it boot when the IDE HD is disconnected?
