missing speaker icon

Hi I have windows vista basic on a 3 year old Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop.The speaker icon in the bottom right hand corner has vanished and I can't turn the sound up properly when watching videos. How do I get this back?

Also when I sync my music to my phone ,sometimes windows media player will not drag the selected track over to the sync box. Why is this? It was doing it before!

Hi Jonno, Unfortunately not fully familiar with Vista, so can only guess, but have you looked in control panel, find Sound and Audio devices or similarly worded, open it and see if volume controls are accessible from there.

If not, click start then run, type in-

 

devmgmt.msc

 

Scroll down the list to Sound Video and Game controllers.

Click any positive marks to expand the list, are there any red or yellow marks showing?

Hi,

 

Try right clicking on the Taskbar ( just to the left of the other icons )

Properties > Notification Area

There should be a check mark next to Volume.

 

Also uncheck "Hide inactive icons" - see if it reappears.

Thanks guy's.got the icon back but no sound. Also when I download an mp3 from some one say Amazon,what do I have to do to save it then sync it to my phone? It keeps giving me an error message when I drag it over to the sync list :(
