New domain, same network

Hello,

I have inheritied a small network of about 6 servers and 60 computers that

has numerous problems all over the place (DHCP, DNS, GP, AD etc) for the past

couple of years (i'm in my second week!!!). To avoid waisting time trying to

fix these issues, I was thinking of maybe rebuilding the domain from scratch

instead, as over the past 5 or so years the previous team didn't really

demote old servers properly and this has left stuff in the above services,

hence the problems.

The only problem with doing this is that rebuilding the domain will require

all users/computers to be re-added etc and I don't think this will be

possible without down-time, which is not acceptable for the business during

9am-5pm and 1 evening isn't enough time to get it all done.

So, I was toying with the idea of creating a new domain in the same forest

and setting up trusts etc between the 2, then slowly get rid of the old

domain as and when everthing is transferred.

What is the best way to approach/accomplish this?

Thanks very much/...

You would want a domain in a new forest. You can create a one-way trust with

resources in the old domain. Move users and computers over to the new domain

in stages. You can migrate accounts

but in my opinion sometimes it is easier to start again, depending on the

circumstances.
