I checked the properties of the folder (and the others higher up the

tree) and they were NOT read-only.

DELTREE worked, used from DOS-in-a-box running under Windows. Deltree

evidently just ignores the protection implied by the attributes

read-only etc.

My DOS dialogue went like this:

There is now no file with that name in that partition. Thanks to you and

PCR (who posted a little later, so I'm making this a reply to you).

BTW (to PCR). I set my Windows Explorer options to show all file

extensions and to show system and hidden files years ago!

E: is my main working partition (Windows is, unsurprisingly, in C:),

containing several thousand files in about 3 GB and, although I have a

couple of folders with Linux-related names, I have never yet run or

installed Linux on my PC.

 

Verdict so far: I got rid of the mysterious file but I don't know what

created it or what kind of status bits caused "access denied".

LocoScript and XnView are not the only ones in the market, any manufacturer that

provides printers that use Postscript and/or Subscript are involved as well.

 

If deleting caused an issue for a device to work properly, he would then know what

it belonged to and could then reinstall it.

Alright. That's right. But I hope that doesn't come up. Looks like

Walter did get rid of the file & only time will tell whether some app

will complain. The dates of the folders he displayed...

Going by those dates, WIN-UX was created 3 years after Linux, MISC &

MANDRAKE. Also, it preceded UBUNTU by a month. Therefore, it didn't come

in with the install or download of those.

(b) Do you have any folders or files with the date 27/03/07,

on any partition?

Very good! Then nothing was deleted with that DELTREE than the one

unwanted file.

I think that clears Linux, in addition to it's 3 years younger than

WIN-UX.

That is still a mystery. I can only guess the file had some kind of

corruption that thwarted the ATTRIB command & even the Windows GUI

method to remove the attribute.

 

Did you say Windows wouldn't delete it? I get a requestor from Windows

stating the file is Read-Only, but it allows the file to be deleted. I

do see DEL in Windows DOS does refuse, though...

No, but I made this note in a notebook on that day (27Mar07):

Turnpike problem: "offline" mail reader says "Turnpike is logging out" &

won't log in, inc. after exit and restart Turnpike Connect. Try Windows

reboot -> OK.

FYI: Turnpike is a non-Microsoft Internet suite (email, connection,

address book, newsreader etc.), originally from Demon UK)

No other notes for that date, from which it does not follow that I

didn't do anything!

Yes: 43 on E:, mostly for two web pages; one about replacing a

motherboard on a PC with XP and one about the XP EULA for OEMs (these

html files are timed 22:14 and their associated image and js files are

22:07, none are nearer to 21:45)

File types for this web page: htm, html, jpeg, js, gif, png

The 2 web pages are in E:\Computing\PC\WinXP and the other files are in

E:\<other path>

 

Also, on C:

\WINDOWS\APPLOG\PGPTRAY.LGC 27/03/07 21:35, size 16 KB: text file, not

containing even the string "APP". I never in fact used PGP (it came with

an email application Turnpike).

I don't remember exactly. I assume I tried to delete it via WinExplorer,

found that was refused, then looked at the attributes and tried

unsuccessfully to change from ReadOnly.

 

I noticed this file originally when I used WinZip to make a backup

archive of parts of E: and sorted the resulting file list in descending

date order. If something similar happens again I'll try to record a

little more about what I was doing.

Hmm. Some kind of crash on the same day a folder was created that

contained that empty E--APPRO.PRI file. (The file itself you posted had

corrupt dates of the future.) Maybe speak to the Turnpike people about

whether they use such files-- but they might not even know. And I can't

think why they wouldn't put it into a folder of their own (like maybe

C:\Program Files\Turnpike), instead of where it ended up. Of course, as

Turnpike governs internet access, it could as well have been something

else in the midst of creating that file when the access was interrupted.

These are WEB pages you saved to a folder not terribly far from the one

that contains the errant file. As Brian A. posted,...

....that file type could/does have to do with the display of images. It

should have various sized images in it, though, & not be empty. I can

think it might have to do save of a WEB page to the wrong folder that

itself was interrupted by the crash of Turnpike, or some other kind of

mishap. Maybe, the page just came in bad for some reason, or you

canceled it before it could finish.

Turnpike must have invoked it on that day for it to appear in that

folder. .Lgc files are used during Defrag to come up with

"C:\WINDOWS\APPLOG\OPTLOG.TXT".

Cookies won't involve that folder, but will go to C:\Windows\Cookies

(under normal conditions).

That's probably what happened. I guess Windows wouldn't do it because

the file was corrupt. However, I don't know, maybe it might have done it

after ScanDisk repaired the dates.

Hopefully, it won't be as much as was going on that first time-- with

crashes, WEB page saves, & 43 files or folders with that same date! But

you may be seeing most ot them in TIFs...

Where does it say Temporary Internet Files are located?

 

Is that where you saw most of the activity on that day?
