sxc656 Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 Hi, On our home computer we have: Maximum Memory Capacity: 4096MB Currently Installed Memory: 512MB Available Memory Slots: 2 Total Memory Slots: 4 Dual Channel Support: Yes CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel CPU Family: Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 2.80GHz Model 2, Stepping 9 CPU Speed: 2800 MHz Will buying 2gb RAM from Crucial make our computer appreciably faster and allow installation of windows 7 32 bit? This is what the Crucial scanner recommended: 1GB, 184-pin DIMM, DDR PC2700 memory module CT12864Z335 Module Size: 1GB Package: 184-pin DIMM Feature: DDR PC2700 Specs: DDR PC2700 • CL=2.5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR333 • 2.5V • 128Meg x 64 • PS. what would i have to do to install 64 bit windows 7 (because we have XP 32bit at the moment i think) and what difference is there between 32 and 64 bit i.e. is there an appreciable difference (i have both at the moment)? Thanks Quote

I think not 100% sure, That that processor is only a 32bit, so to you last question a lot of problems running a 64bit OS on If you would like an honest opinion, I would advise that you save your money and look at buying a new tower, or at least a new motherboard and processor, and 4gig of Ram, and I'll bet your HDD is IDE so I would replace that with a 500Gig Sata HDD here is a rough guide at prices Scan.co.uk: BX80571E6300 - Intel Pentium Dual-Core, E6300, S775, Wolfdale, 2.80 GHz, 2MB Cache, 10.5x Core Ratio, 65W, Retail Scan.co.uk: Asus P5KPL SE, Intel G31, Sok 775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 1066(OC)/667/800, SATA 3Gb/s, ATX Scan.co.uk: TWIN2X4096-6400C5C - 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC, Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-18 Scan.co.uk: 500 GB Western Digital WD5000AAKS Caviar Blue, SATA 3Gb/s, 7200rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.9 ms About £200 maybe a bit more depending on what PSU you have Quote

They seem to offer good price with warranty. I am looking to get a new PC and keep this Pentium 4 as a secondary one with reasonable not exceptional performance so don't really want to splash the cash on it. It runs acceptably now so I am just hoping an extra 2GB of RAM will perk it up costing about £50. Your thoughts? And RE that new PC i was looking at the I7s but have heard of new USB and hardrive technologies so do you think i should wait a while for the new batch of PCs come through?Looking to spend 1K max. Match Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 Nothing wrong with crucial RAM, just suggesting that you shop round for the best deal, and offering an alternative. but have heard of new USB and hardrive technologies so do you think i should wait a while LOL that's a hard question to answer, There always seems to be something new on the Horizon, and quite often when it arrives its not all that it was made out it was going to be, or advantage over price makes it an unworthy investment unless you have a specific use or need for it, Like SSD's at the moment (Solid State Drives). So that is a question you have to answer yourself. Quote

They aren't that many I5s and I7s about at the moment though, HP Elite and Dell are the ones that spring to mind but nobody except Ebuyer has stock! Anyway I digress :) Crucial do seem to offer the best deal btw. Cheers again Quote
RandyL Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 You're thinking of upgrading Windows XP to Windows 7? That's a big leap. I highly suggest you look at the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor as there is much more than memory to consider. Make sure you read the instructions. Quote We are all members helping other members.
