Guest EricMill Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Hi, I have a rather unique situation on my hands. When setting up our initial network, we had some delays in receiving the proper hardware for our Domain Controller (in a single DC environment). Our non-OEM version of Windows Server 2003 was installed on a temporary box for production use while we were waiting for the proper hardware to arrive. Now that the proper hardware has arrived, we need to transfer our license of Windows Server 2003 from the temporary box to the proper hardware. I've researched the process of moving all of the FSMO roles and services over to a new primary DC, I'm confident that that part of the process will go smoothly. I am concerned when considering the fact that we will have two copies of the same license key on the same domain at the same time, even though the new server installation will not be activated until the temporary server has been decommissioned. The most pressing question, would this process violate Microsoft licensing policy? Will there be issues on the domain when using multiple copies of the same license key on different DCs? I know each DC is given a unique GUID when added to the domain, but I was unsure of how this GUID was created. If it uses the license key to generate the GUID, will DNS register two copies of the same domain controller on the network? -- -Eric
