Hi,

This is my first post. I have a Samsung ES60 Digital Camera. It won't fully connect to my PC.

~The camera is brand new & came with an installation disc. On the installation disc was printing & photo editing software but no drivers. The camera manual says it is plug n play so no drivers needed.

When I connect the camera, Windows opens up 7 says found new hardware Samsung digital camera. I then get the prompt to install camera with "found new hardware" installation. I'm running Windows XP Professional 32 Bit SP3.

The found new hardware installation will search, but fail to install. If I open my computer, the camera is not displayed. I have contacted Samsung & they say it is not the camera & it should work. They did advise drivers from an older camera model which did not work either. I tried the camera on 2 othr laptops, 1 running Vista premium & the other XP SP2. The camera will plug & play on both these laptops.

I have simular issues with an HP Scanner/printer & a memory stick! (Sandisc curiser 2GB) I also have another memory stick which will plug & play on the offending laptop. I'm now confused & stuck.

My troublesome Laptop is a Gateway MT3107b, with Windows XP SP3 Proffessional. 2GB Ram, Intel Celeron M processor, ATi Express 200m graphics. It was 3 USB ports & i've tried all 3 ports.I have the same problem. This Laptop originally came with Vista pre-installed but was changed back as we prefer XP. This was done BEFORE the camera & Printer/Scanner was purchased. The Printer/Scanner comes with drivers, but the installation still fails.

Sorry for the long winded start, but I'm hoping this is something simple.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Advanced troubleshooting tips for general USB problems in Windows XP

I would start at the bottom of the page and work up ;)

Tried the MS toubleshooting before I posted on here. I also searched the MS site for USB driver updates.

So you've

re-installed the USB Controller Drivers.

Checked your Bios is upto date.

This Laptop originally came with Vista pre-installed but was changed back as we prefer XP

So

it's possible that their is an incompatibility problem with the XP Drivers and the Laptops Hardware.

Try re-install VISTA and try it??? Yes I agree not a favorable Idea

Its possible that their is a corrupt registry entry in XP OS.

Try re-installing XP

it's possible that their is a hardware fault.

If you've tried all of the above this would be the only explanation left. and would probably require the motherboard being replaced.

Unless anyone else has any more Idea's that's the best I can do for you, Sorry if this don't help much :(

Right I don't know if this is the problem you are having but I'll tell you a problem I had when I experienced USB issues. My webcam, pen drive and ipod nano all stopped working one day in my USB port. I tried microsofts solutions to no avail. Went into the computers bios setup on starting it up and found out my USB port was disabled. Re-enabled my USB port and had no problems since.

OK,

Firstly - thanks for all the suggestions. Some I have tried. But here's the wierd thing, I re-coonected my Samsung Camera & after windows found new hardware wizzard had stopped, I manually installed "mass storage device" drivers & now the camera works! - tried this on the USB memory stick but that doean't work. I've not tried the printer again - yet.

Maybe the USB port itself is faulty. I can't think of anything else to suggest because you've uninstalled and re-installed. done the microsoft help runny thing (can't remember the name of it)...you've done everything that is expected. You tried going back to driver settings?

Yes. I've tried going back to driver settings.

I think it is an issue with XP, or some other software causing a conflict? rather than the USB ports. I have a Memory stick which works in all 3 USB ports without any problems & now that I've installed the mouse again, this also works in all 3 USB ports. My wife ran a virus scan & said that it found no viruses. I may do it myself as I have better knowledge with the virus scanner. (she may only have done a partial scan or a quick scan). I've also have a copy of Uniblue driver scanner, but this tells we all drivers are up to date.

Anyway thanks for the suggestions

I've just realised that iv'e got XP installed twice on the PC!! As I don't usually boot it up I did yesterday & today. But during load up, I am prompted to select O/S. Both being XP. Is this the cause of my problems?

How can I remove the non used one? with out re-installind from scratch?

Hello Dazzac. I have a vague idea of what might be the cause of your issues but let me answer your other question first.

How can I remove the non used one? with out re-installind from scratch?

If both Windows are on different partitions, then you can easily remove the unused one by deleting the unused one's folder and then editing the boot file. In theory, you can use the same if both the Windows are on the same partition but there is a bit of risk involved.

Coming back to your original question, I think this might be due to a corruption in your driver files. I would suggest that you copy the files in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers from the laptop to the affected computer. When asked to replace those files, answer yes. If that is not viable, please let me know and I will upload a copy of the driver files from my own computer.

Oh, and please back up those files before going forward with those instructions. They might come in handy if something goes wrong.

Hope that helps. :)

Hi Goku,

Part 1.

Thank you for your help. I'll split my answers/queries in 2.

The Windows are not on different partitions, as there is no partition installed unless its hidden.

What risks are involved or am I just better off leaving as is?

Part 2.

I did a search through windows, for the files on affected laptop. Some are in blue? and would I copy all files? - I am think you mean I copy the files from a good laptop to install on the affected laptop. Would it have to be copied from XP pro or could it be XP home or Vista (that's my choices!) or off the XP installation disc?

Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks.

If both the Windows installation are on the same partition, then the question arises whether they are both bootable or not. If they are then deleting any of the installtions might result in rendering the computer unbootable since the computer will think that the boot files are corrupt. There is only a slight possibility of this happening but still there is.

If one of the Windows installed is unbootable, then you can go ahead and delete it like any other folder. When you are done, please post back here and we will proivide you with further instructions to remove the option from the boot menu. :)

Feel free to ask all the questions you want. We are here to answer them. :)

I am unsure of what you mean by "did a search through windows, for the files". I meant that you browse to the above location on the "good" laptop and copy the driver files from there and then replace them with the ones on the "bad" laptop. I would upload a copy of those files on my desktop but I will understand if you don't trust me.

Though whatever you do, make sure you back up those existing files by copying them to a safe location.

Hope that answers your questions. :)

Hi,

Sorry for the delay - work got in my way!! :)

What I did, was use windows search facility for the folder of "drivers".

Yes please, if you could PM or post a copy of those files that would be great! - I think it may be a driver issue as I have had the dreaded "Blue Screen" appear. When Windows send its error report, IE opens & takes me to the results page telling me I have either a driver conflict or hardware conflict. I'm banking on the drivers, as I have only had this problem since I installed XP. Everything was working fine with Vista installed, just that my wife did not like Vista. (I have considered upgrading to Windows 7) which I've posted in a different forum)

Hello Dazzac. I have to rush out for a moment but I will send you the files within an hour or two. Thanks for your trust in me. :)

Here is the link to the files Dazzac. It is an archive and you will need to extract its contents. But first I would liike you to copy the folder named "drivers" located within C:\WINDOWS\system32 to a safe location.

Then extract the contents of the archive to the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers folder and answer yes to replace the files if asked. After, that is done, please restart your computer.

Let me know if you need more specific instructions. Sorry for the delay. :)

Re-installed drivers fro USB. No difference. But, my memory stick still works in all USB ports, but the mouse only works in the one port. its weird! - is it a case of wrong driver or the driver not recognising 3 ports or Windows not recognising the 3 ports?

Hi just a qiuck note - all is now OK as I've upgraded Laptop from XP to Windows 7!

All USB ports work with Camera, printer ETC. Even the Card reader works (this was an issue with Vista Anyway) I've no idea what was wrong with XP, but I'm happy that I spent the cash to upgrade!!

Thanks for the update, at least we know now that the Windows XP installation was the likely problem with a corruption somewhere in it.

Just a final thing, has the installation of Windows7 removed all traces of both those copies of XP?

I hate to think they may be still there to cause future problems.

No the installation has not removed all traces of both copies. On boot up, it prompts to select either Win 7 or "older version of windows" Which would be old XP. It is also wasting disc space. I have run disc cleaner to remove any old temp files which it detected a small amount (5MB!) Do you know how to remove the extra copy of XP?

Ok, it looks like the installation of Windows7 has created a new partition for it, and left the old XP installations alone. You may have to install one of the many partition managers, some are free, to remove the old XP partitions. Not something I have done personally, so I will leave any further advice to one of our member with more experience.

Hii dazzac

when you ran disk cleaner in win 7 you wil also get the option to clean system files you may have a file in there called windows.old that can be removed you can also remove the xp operating system by going to start then computer you will see c and d drive I hope c drive contains your new win 7 installation and D will have your old xp one you will have to provide admin rights to acsess this drive when you have you can right click it and format the drive thus deleting the old xp and leaving some free space to use as you wish. Hope that helps
