Windows XP Pro, Dell 4100. Recently, after I select "copy" from "edit" I

cannot "paste" the copied matter. In fact, "paste" is grayed out.

Does the problem remain after you have logged off and then back on to

the PC?

I've been having this problem for the last few days. I have my computer

configured so that I don't have to log on or off as I am the only user. I

have started, turned off, and re-started several times.

System Restore to before the problem happened!

AVG, on its daily scan, discovered a trojan horse in my System Restore and

yesterday I had to turn off System Restore, restart the computer, and turn

System Restore back on, so I've lost all my prior restore points.

Incidentally, I reset it to 5% or 1034. Not to hijack my own post, but is

that sufficient?

Depends on the size of your hard drive and how many restore points you want

to keep on hand. How about some specifics? After all, 5% of a 20GB drive

is a lot different than 5% of a 200GB drive. Restore points use 100MB+ per

each.

Isn't "5% or 1034" specific enough? ;-)

Copy/Paste Problems? Click Start, Run, and enter these lines:

regsvr32 ole32.dll (Press Enter key)

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll (Press Enter key)

Also try Kelly's tweak (you'll find instructions at the top of the page).

Line 233 - Enable Drag and Drop

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Click Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW, click OK. If any files are damaged

or missing, they'll be replaced. You may need to reboot afterwards so

damaged files will be replaced.

Always?

Some files (i.e., some PDFs) are rigged such that the contents cannot be

copied. I think with these files you can seemingly "copy" but there's really

nothing in the clipboard, so subsequent "paste" is unavailable.

I don't know what the 1034 represents.

Re: "Paste" Doesn't Work

Another possibility. If you use Works Suite, when Word opens it clears the

contents of the clipboard. So if you've copied something from the Web before

opening Word, the clipboard will be empty. As a test, before opening Word,

see if your copied material will paste into Notepad.

I see your computer was a victim of malware, that is the cause of the

problem. Please use the procedure Elmo provided.

Re: "Paste" Doesn't Work

Thanks. I tested the copy and paste with Microsoft Word, and it works.

However, I tried copying and pasting chess games from an email into a chess

software, and they didn't work. But the strange thing is that I was always

able to copy and paste those types of game notations into the chess software

successfully before. I had noticed that I could not even copy some stuff

from some websites since the website would not allow that, but I had been

able to copy chess notations on emails before.

"1034" is 1034 mb. I've left that as it is.

Re: "Paste" Doesn't Work

Try Ctrl+Insert(copy) and Shift+Insert(paste) that sometimes works when

the "r-button" menu fails.

Ah ha! Well, there's still might be a fix.

Contact the web master of the site at issue. He should be able to disable

the code that's disabling the copy command.

Well, we can almost surely say that 5% won't be 1034 gig, or 1034 Kb.

So wouldn't one naturally think megabytes?
