jinkie Posted January 8, 2010 Posted January 8, 2010 hello i have a new 4gb flash drive but when i tryed to install anything onto it it says there is no free space but this is a new drive any help i have tryed to format this but no joy Quote
jinkie Posted January 8, 2010 Author Posted January 8, 2010 it appears as two separate drives (the secure part, 1MB in size, and the actual storage part which is the rest of it). I want to completely wipe the thing so it just functions as a bog-standard USB stick - is this possible? as it is only letting me use the 1gb of space Quote
Tootech Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 You should be able to do it from Disk Management. Start>My Computer>Manage and look towards the bottom of the window that opens. Quote
jinkie Posted January 9, 2010 Author Posted January 9, 2010 all it says is new volume (f:) file system :fat it says i have 998kb of free space but it is a new 4gb drive Quote
Jelly Bean Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 You need to format it via disk management and assign a drive letter. Internal hard drives, external hard drives and USB pen drives are never exact you will always find them slightly more smaller in gig/mb than they actualy are, this is natural. Jelly Bean Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 To get to this utility, open up Control Panel, and type in partition into the search box.. you’ll immediately see the link show up: http://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/01/WindowsLiveWriter/ShrinkaPartitionforFreeinWindowsVista_ABC6/image04.png Shrink a Partition In the Disk Management screen, just right-click on the partition that you want to shrink, and select “Shrink Volume” from the menu. http://www.howtogeek.com/geekers/up/sshot-2009-08-27-15-50-21.png In the Shrink dialog, you will want to enter the amount you want to shrink by, not the new size. For example, if you want to shrink your 50gb partition by roughly 10gb so that it will now be roughly 40gb, enter 10000 into the box: http://www.howtogeek.com/geekers/up/sshot-2009-08-27-15-56-05.png Extend a Partition In the Disk Management screen, just right-click on the partition that you want to shrink, and select “Extend Volume” from the menu. http://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/01/WindowsLiveWriter/ShrinkaPartitionforFreeinWindowsVista_ABC6/image08.png On this screen, you can specify the amount that you want to increase the partition by. In this case, I’m going to extend it back to the roughly 50GB size that it was before. Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
