Hi,

I have a 2003 SBS Domain and I have a static IP address from my ISP, I want

to setup FTP so users can access files externally, my question is do I have

to have the company hosting my Domain Name or the company hosting my website

redirect an address for me so I would have an URL like

ftp://mycompany.com.

Thanks Craig

Hi - this is an extremely dangerous thing to do from a security standpoint -

don't do it. Have them use VPN instead (or RWW). And try posting future SBS

questions in microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs - SBS does a lot of things

its own way and it's critical that you follow the right steps/advice.

My advice - never open up FTP or HTTP to your LAN at all, let alone your

domain controller.

That said - whomever hosts your public domain would need to set up

ftp.mycompany.com to point at your public IP, and you'd have to allow the

traffic in through your firewall. You likely wouldn't want to use

mycompany.com (the root/domain) for this as your website is probably

accessible that way currently.

RE: FTP Question

Dear Craig,

Thanks for using this newsgroup and as well as to Lanwench for the inputs.

In considering of security factors, I agree with Lanwench. We can create a

new independent server for FTP propose. Of course, if we obtain a public IP

address from ISP, we can redirect URL like ftp://mycompany.com to our FTP

server by manually adding a record on the ISP DNS server.

For information on how to add a record on DNS, please refer to:

Modify an existing resource record

http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/8b87c361-454e-44bc-98

84-3f1a2a7077071033.mspx?mfr=true

Also, please contact your ISP to ask them assist you to adjust the DNS

record according to your demand.

I hope this helps. If anything is unclear, please feel free to post back.

Sincerely

Morgan Che

be

okay? And, I have to go to the ISP not the company hosting my website?

Thanks again Craig

Precisely what he said!

> would that be

> okay?

No, not if it's on your LAN. Put it in an isolated network/DMZ if you're

going to do this....although this will somewhat precludes the purpose you

had in mind, however.

> And, I have to go to the ISP not the company hosting my website?

Whomever hosts your public / internet domain's DNS zone. This may be your

ISP, may be your webhosting company, may be your kindly Aunt Gladys - we

can't tell from here. :-)

Seriously, why FTP? There are many better options - you've got several built

into your SBS domain now. That's why I suggested you *not* post in general

server groups without first posting to (or concurrently crossposting to) the

SBS one.

Re: FTP Question

Dear Craig,

Thanks for the reply.

" I have a Server 2003 R2 that I was going to use as the FTP server would

that be okay?"

You can use this Windows Server 2003 R2 as FTP server. However, we

recommend you put this server into the DMZ or an isolated network zone as

Lanwench's suggestion for security purpose. In this way, you can generally

block others to utilize FTP access to attack the interior network or

servers.

" I have to go to the ISP not the company hosting my website?",

I think both ISP and some companies can provide you such service to host a

Domain name on public DNS.

About how to create a FTP site:

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Creating-Configuring-FTP

.html

For more detailed information about FTP, please search on the internet.

There are lots of relevant instructions which can help you get started.

I hope this helps.

Thanks.

Morgan Che
