dvd drive problem

I have a dvd-rw drive with a door opening problem. The startup light will

come on at bootup and will light when pressed , but the door will not open.

It appears the only corrective proceedure that has been successful is to

unplug the ide cable and reboot. This will last for a while. Motherboard ,

drive , driver , or ?

Probably the optical drive. Swap it out for a known-working one. If that

doesn't work you can move onto the next thing.

Check for a Firmware Flash update for the optical drive. Also might

help to replace the IDE cable and also check the jumpering on the

drive. Is the drive the only device on the IDE channel ?

When a previously working drive stops or when its action becomes

intermittent, ONE thing is for sure: it's not a jumper problem.

It's also very unlikely that the cable is the cause.

A CD/DVD drive which does not open by the Eject button could be

considered a hardware failure. To confirm that this is not a software

problem, try opening the drive with the Eject option on the drive's

right click menu in "My Computer." If this also has problems, you

are better off replacing the DVD drive.

I had that problem. I was advised to replace the drive. That fixed it, for a

couple weeks, then it started up again. It's still doing it.

When it has a disk in it, it opens normally most of the time. When it's

empty, I have to use a paper clip.
